You’re called into your boss’s office, and he or she breaks the news. Your mind is racing and your heart is pounding, but your body freezes up. Even if you’ve seen the writing on the wall, on some level it still feels like a surprise. Perhaps you’ve made some mistakes or saw that the organization was moving in another direction. One way or another, the end result is the same.


You’ve just been laid off. Here’s what to do next.

1. KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON

“Stay calm, that’s the first thing,” advises Elaine Varelas, managing partner at Keystone Partners, a Boston-based talent management firm. “Don’t have an emotional reaction, if you can help it.”

Those who can’t help it, says Varelas, should try to stay composed while explaining that they feel overwhelmed at the thought of leaving their colleagues and achievements behind. Responding with anger, shouting, or violence of any kind is never acceptable. “Silence is a much better choice,” she says.

You might rapidly reflect on all the time you’ve spent at the company, how you’re going to break the news to friends and family, and what you’re going to do next—simultaneously—but it’s important to be patient and take note of your manager’s feedback. “There’s a lot of valuable information there,” says Varelas.

Of particular importance to those who have just been laid off is severance benefit continuation—including health care, 401k contributions, and outplacement, says Varelas. They should also ask about company computer and phone policies, any non-compete clauses they may not be aware of, unemployment benefits, potential for rehire, and whether or not they will receive a reference. “You can also offer to transfer information [to your replacement],” says Varelas. “That’s a tough task but very impressive.”

2. GO INTO SPIN MODE

Once the meeting has concluded and you’ve gathered all the feedback you can, the next step is to consider how you’re going to present the news to those that will inevitably ask. “There’s a really tight circle of people to whom you can tell the brutal truth,” says Varelas, including close friends and family.

Beyond that circle, however, those who have recently lost their jobs need to choose their words carefully when describing what happened, and craft a “public statement” that sums up the situation in a measured, factual manner.

That’s going to be something like, ‘The company changed direction, and as a result a number of people were transitioned out of the organization, so now my focus is on finding a new job,’” says Varelas.

The concise and accurate public statement can be used to provide an explanation to potential future employers in online profiles, job interviews, and while networking. It will also inevitably be used by contacts speaking on your behalf as you begin to network.

“That public statement becomes really important, because that’s the statement that’s going to travel without you, so you want that statement to serve you well,” says Varelas. “Your spouse, your partner, your older kids need that public statement as well, because people are going to ask them what happened.”

3. BEEF UP YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE

According to the Jobvite 2015 Recruiter Nation Survey, 92% of recruiters admitted that they use social media to find candidates. As a result, job hunters need to ensure that their online presence is up to date and optimized for potential future employers before they begin shaking hands and handing out resumes in person.

That includes deleting any less-than-professional photos and posts on public social media profiles, updating online portfolios and personal websites to reflect your latest achievements, and building a LinkedIn profile that sends the right message to recruiters.

LinkedIn career expert Blair Decembrele says that those looking for their next career opportunity shouldn’t be afraid to say so in their profile. She says that details such as the type of position they’re looking for, their location, and whether they’re willing to relocate makes it easier for recruiters to consider them for potential positions.

“Adding a summary of 40 words or more makes your profile more likely to turn up in a future employer’s search,” she says. “Review desirable job descriptions for your field on LinkedIn, and include those keywords in your profile.”

4. AVOID THE JOB BOARD BLACK HOLE

One of the most common traps people fall into after getting laid off is focusing too much of their efforts on applying for jobs on online job boards.

“People go to the online job sites, apply to lots of different jobs, and don’t get any responses because their application goes into a black hole,” says Scott Uhrig, a partner with executive search firm Whiterock Partners. “Number one, you’re not making any progress, and number two, you’re not getting any feedback, which you interpret as rejection. So you’ve just been laid off, now you’re getting rejected, you’re getting no responses, and you start this downward spiral of despair.”

While Uhrig suggests avoiding online job boards altogether, he says that if you do come across a role that seems to be a particularly good fit, there are other ways to apply effectively. “Try to network your way into the hiring manager, or contact someone you know already in the company,” he says. However, he warns that “competition for posted jobs is insane,” and that once a job is listed online, it’s probably already too late.

5. FORCE YOURSELF TO NETWORK

Those who have been laid off the need to meet with people face-to-face. In fact, 85% of people [url=https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/new-survey-reveals-85-all-jobs-filled-via-networking-lou-adler]surveyed by LinkedIn found their current gig through networking.


Uhrig says that most job seekers only spend five to 10 hours of their week knocking on doors and meeting their contacts for coffee when they should be dedicating upwards of 30 hours a week to networking efforts. “It’s amazing how little time and effort people who are looking for jobs actually spend networking,” he says.

Filling a schedule with that many coffee and lunch dates may seem daunting, but it’s important to get creative with sources. Start with industry contacts, former colleagues, and others in your direct circle, but cast a wide net, suggests New York-based executive coach Ann Mehl.

“The individuals in your personal circles may not seem like good sources at first glance,” she says, adding that research has found that most people find jobs through second- and third-degree connections. Mehl advises job seekers to “make a list of names from your holiday card list, cell phone directory, email contacts, professional circles, and alumni network.”

6. BE REALISTIC

While these steps can help, it’s important to maintain reasonable expectations. For example, Mehl advises job seekers to look at the networking process as a way of staying up to date on what’s happening in their industry rather than as a direct path to the next job opportunity.

“These are low-risk conversations; you’re simply checking in,” she says. “Treat this as an exploratory expedition. You’re getting back into the mix, gaining some data on the market, and building momentum.”

The slow-and-steady approach is far more likely to produce positive results in the long run. In fact, research has found that half of all jobs never get advertised publicly, and only 2% of applicants who submit resumes online are interviewed.

“If you start developing meaningful networking relationships with people at organizations that hire people like you, over the course of the next three to six months, there’s going to be a position that opens up, and they’ll contact you before they post that job,” he says. “Now your competition is five people, not 500.”

STAYING PREPARED IN THE EVENT OF ANOTHER LAYOFF

When it comes to maintaining a steady career, the old adage, “Hope for the best while preparing for the worst,” rings true. Once you’re back to work you can prepare for that worst-case scenario by continuing to network with your contacts, helping out others in your industry whenever possible, and keeping a running list of career accomplishments, just in case they’re suddenly needed again.

A few years ago, I started an e-commerce store that allowed me to earn extra income in a somewhat passive manner. Getting the business off the ground required time and effort, but it didn't cost me any money.

And within a month or two, I was earning money in my sleep. As a therapist, I was used to the 'billable hour.' Earning money at all hours of the day without putting in any extra effort seemed magical.

I chose to sell fine jewelry. I knew the markup on jewelry is high--often more than 100%. Yet, the shipping cost is low since jewelry doesn't weigh much. I could beat the prices offered by brick and mortar stores who had to pay rent and cover the costs of employees.

With a little research, I learned how to obtain a jeweler's license and I opened an account with a reputable wholesaler. From there, I chose the products I wanted to sell, named the company, and launched a website.

In the years since then, I've learned that there's value not in just selling products, but also in selling the online store. Once the e-commerce store shows consistent income, I sell the company.

But it's a strange phenomenon--I'm not actually selling any inventory. Basically, I'm selling a pre-made website and the inside scoop on how to operate a drop-ship business.

If you've ever dreamed of having passive income or creating a side hustle without any start-up cost, here's how you can start your own drop-ship e-commerce store.

1. Choose a niche product.

There's a lot of competition when you're selling products online. And you're probably never going to outrank the big box stores in search engines for popular products like baby strollers or TVs. You also won't be able to beat their prices.

It's important to find a niche market. Whether you sell purple pens or you offer monkey-themed furniture, specialize in something. Choose products you're interested in learning about, talking about, and writing about because you're going to need plenty of knowledge about the products you're selling.

2. Research wholesalers.

The joy of a dropship business is that it doesn't require any inventory. The wholesaler ships direct to the customer at whatever markup you choose.

But, it's important to find a reputable wholesale company who keeps products in stock and ships orders to customers on time. Your business will only be as good as the wholesale company you choose so do plenty of research to find one that suits your needs.

3. Create a website.

Buy your domain name and create your website. Although you can hire someone to do it for you, learning how to build your own website is best.

You may need to make changes to your website down the road on short notice (if your wholesaler runs out of stock on an item or you want to run a sale on a moment's notice because a current event puts your product in the news). And you'll save a lot of money and hassle if you can make those changes yourself.

Your wholesaler will most likely supply you with images of your products. Create detailed product descriptions so buyers know exactly what they're purchasing. The more accurate your description, the fewer returns you'll have.

4. Choose a shopping cart.

Your shopping plays a big role in how many sales you'll actually get. A cluttered cart with too many options isn't good for sales.

While there are some good free shopping carts, most of them have limitations. Some only allow you to list a certain number of products and others don't allow for coupon codes.

Look for a shopping cart that has features most helpful to your business. One that will suggest similar products to buyers, for example, can greatly increase sales. The shopping cart is the heart of your new business so choose carefully.

5. Decide how to offer customer service.

No matter how well you describe your products or how clearly you spell out your policies, customers will have questions. So you'll need to decide how you will offer customer service.

You can simply set up an email address and respond to customers yourself whenever you can. You could also offer a phone number for people to call with questions. A phone number can help you appear more reputable, but that means you need someone available to take calls. A virtual assistant may be the best option.

Another option is to offer a live chat on your site. Many customers are shy about calling, but eager to chat online. A virtual assistant may be able to assist you with this as well, unless you happen to be a freelancer who works from home and can answer chat questions during regular business hours.

6. Figure out how to deal with returns.

Customers are more likely to buy your products if you accept returns. Returns can be a little more complicated when you're drop-shipping items however.

Some wholesalers allow customers to return items to them directly. Then, the wholesaler refunds you and you refund the customer. Other wholesalers will only accept returns from you.

So you may need to get returned items shipped to you. Then, you might hold onto the product and ship it to the next customer who orders it, or you could ship it back to the wholesaler for your refund.

You'll need to decide if you want to use your home address or get a post office box if you're going to advertise the return shipping address.

7. Consider selling on a variety of sites.

You don't have to limit yourself to your own website. Adding your products to eBay, Amazon, or other marketplaces within your niche can often double or triple your revenue.

But before you do so, make sure your wholesaler is able to consistently deliver quality products on time. Otherwise, you'll receive bad reviews and your accounts may get suspended.

8. Market your products.

Just because you build a website and offer products for a lower price than your competition doesn't mean people will find you. You need to find a way to market yourself so you people know your e-commerce site exists.

Create a blog on your e-commerce site. Open social media accounts in your company's name and post interesting content. Offer giveaways and special promotions to your followers. Start a newsletter. There are many ways to attract customers and you'll need to find the strategies that work best for your products.

If you offer a very specific product that people are likely searching for online, you might find it's worth the effort to use Google ads. But you'll need to keep a careful eye on your marketing efforts to ensure that you're earning a good return on your investment.

9. Update your products and website as needed.

It's important to keep updating your products and website. Add new products so customers keep coming back.

Make sure your pictures and product descriptions are accurate. If you receive complaints or concerns about specific products frequently, consider removing that product from your page.

You Can Do It

Creating an e-commerce store requires a fair amount of time. But, with little to no upfront costs, it can be profitable fast.

And if I can do it, I bet you can too. I'm a social worker turned author without any tech background. I just had to believe I could do it. Within a few months, I was earning more from my online store than I was earning in my day job.

I must say, there's something inherently satisfying about waking up to an inbox full of orders and knowing you just earned money in your sleep.

There are times when cutting ties is the best thing to do. Here are the circumstances when burning a bridge can be a good thing for your career.

There is certain career advice that just about everyone seems to take as gospel. Always pay your dues, don’t be too picky about your first job, and keep your options open when you start out. The merits of these types of advice have been questioned, debated, and in some cases–even debunked. But there’s one piece of advice that seems to stick: “Whatever you do, avoid burning bridges!”

But is this still good advice to follow? After all, we live in a time where job-hopping isn’t considered to be too much of a stigma, and where career changes are commonplace. Not to mention, technology has forced many industries to undergo rapid transformations, which means that layoffs and restructuring are also pretty common among companies.

According to HR professional and career strategist Dorianne St Fleur, this advice isn’t always applicable to the modern workplace. She tells Fast Company, “Most of it stems from the way the workforce used to be. The market…we have now, where people can jump around, and they do jump around, it’s not really looked down upon anymore. I don’t think the advice is keeping up with the way the workforce works.”

St Fleur’s own experience shaped her outlook on burning bridges. “By nature, I’m a rules follower.” So early on in her career, she largely stuck to this advice. But she found herself laid off in 2011. “I know we’re at-will employees here in the U.S., but seeing it at work where you go in to work one day, and literally the next day you don’t have a job, I realized I needed to look out for myself and my career, because these companies look out for their bottom line.”

St Fleur began to understand the flaw in the advice that you should avoid to burn a bridge at all cost. Of course, it’s never okay to do anything with malicious intent, and you should always strive to be as professional and as transparent as possible, she asserts. But sometimes, ruffling a few feathers is what it takes to move forward in your career. Here are three instances where it may be worth burning a bridge:

1. YOU ARE EXPERIENCING HARASSMENT, OR THE JOB HAS A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON YOUR HEALTH

“If your health and well-being are in danger, it doesn’t matter if you’re burning bridges,” St. Fleur says. In the ideal world, individuals who are mistreated at work should be able to report their experience, and have the company take appropriate actions. Unfortunately–as we’ve learned from the experiences of several women in tech this year–many times companies don’t do so. This leaves the employee with a choice of putting up with the abuse, or leaving the company and potentially burning some bridges in the process.

2. YOU HAVE A STRONG SUSPICION THAT THE COMPANY MIGHT BE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS

If there’s evidence that the company is on thin ice financially–and likely to go out of business soon, it’s probably smart to start planning your next move, even if doing so might upset your employer. “You can read the writing on the wall, they’re not doing well,” St Fleur says. As she pointed out earlier, companies rarely hesitate to let go of employees when they need to cut costs or restructure, so an employee shouldn’t hesitate to protect themselves when they need to.

3. IT’S THE ONLY WAY FOR YOU TO MOVE FORWARD IN YOUR CAREER

For former attorney turned publicist and Fast Company contributor Kristi A. Dosh, it was necessary to burn a professional bridge, because if she didn’t do so, she’d be missing out on opportunities for career growth. When Dosh was laid off as an attorney in 2009, one of her partners at the firm connected her with a friend who was a partner at another law firm, and she secured another job straight away. She soon found that it was the opposite of her previous firm. She was micromanaged, and was told to fire a client she bought to the firm who generated $80,000 in revenue. After just four months on the job, Dosh left. She wrote, “Traumatic though it was (and still is), it was the best decision I ever made for my career.”

St Fleur agrees that if a better career opportunity came along that would be better for you in the long term, you shouldn’t hesitate to take it. “You should be doing things that are in your best interest, and if you leave early, you should never feel bad for making moves for yourself and your family.”

HOW TO REBUILD A BURNED BRIDGE 

It’s important to mention that if you’re ever faced with circumstances that require you to burn a bridge, it is possible to rebuild it. St Fleur says that a lot of times, people assume they can’t mend the relationship, so they don’t even try. But that’s not necessarily true. It is important to give them some distance to heal the wounds, but once sufficient time has passed, she recommends making an effort to touch base. St Fleur urges people to remind themselves, “At the end of the day, these managers, they’re human. They can change their minds.”

How to build a professional network from scratch?

Every week, I invite you to another "must-see" business event that will surely be full of talented people that could influence my company. I know I should attend, but it's annoying. Very often, I end up standing in a corner, clinging to the only person I know, feeling guilty about not taking advantage of the situation.

Recently, I attended a breakfast for women, which was held in a huge cellar near a pier. I went through the door and picked up the label with my name to face a room of 1200 women dressed in many colors and with lots of energy. It seemed like everyone was having fun.

And now that? Do I know anyone? If I stay here alone will people think I'm weird? I felt a tightness in my chest.

I suspect that many of us have an unfortunate time at these events, but few admit it. Everyone smiles and walks around the place shaking hands, laughing and exchanging business cards. How To Build A Powerful Professional Network

That's me. I have created a robust work network and have convinced Google, eBay, Twitter and Facebook leaders to support my emerging venture so they could assume that I am an expert in socializing. But the truth is that I am introverted and have had problems with professional socialization for years. I'd rather be at home reading a book.

However, I recognize the importance of this type of activity, so I strive for it... mainly because some casual encounters at events have become relationships that have made all the difference for my business. I like to do things well. That's why I have developed techniques that help me establish relationships and improve, or even enjoy, the process of cultivating contacts. Have brief conversations with many people

I find it difficult to establish lasting connections in events. Instead, I try to have short conversations with as many people as possible and make sure I have your contact information so I can follow up later.

If I see someone I want to talk to, kindly approach me and say, "Sorry to interrupt, but such and such a person told me that I should know you. I have to go in a bit, and I just wanted your business card to contact you later. " It's hard enough for people to say no when you say something like that.

After the event, I contact them, and I agree to go to lunch or have a cup of coffee. That is an environment in which I feel much more comfortable.

Concentrate on what you do well

Although large informal groups seem to me to be a challenge, I know that I'm doing well with formal presentations and one-person talks. Instead of worrying about my inability to be charming at events with large groups, I focus on my more natural ability to talk to one person and do it openly. If you're excellent at chatting with a person, that's all you need to create a professional network.

It is about establishing a few close relationships

Some people have hundreds or thousands of people in their professional network. In addition to social networks, where I do not know most of the people I'm supposed to be connected with, I would say that my nearby network of work includes about fifteen people, but all of them are special. Every year, I know about one to three individuals who turn out to be fabulous. It's never about what a person can do for me, but to realize that I have found someone who can teach me something valuable. Almost all the right things that have come to me come from one of these fifteen people.

Introverts have different strengths. I spent years thinking it should be different, speak louder, be more funny, more extroverted. Now I recognize the need to be grateful for the talents I do have.
