Speaking on a stage in front of an audience is a pretty scary privilege. You have the attention of a group of people and the opportunity to have a direct impact on their lives (and potentially their futures). Follow these tips to make excellent presentations: 

1. Tell Good Stories

If you do not read more of this article, focus on this point. Think about the stories you can tell that are interesting but also include a lesson. We all have stories to tell, but will they resonate with your audience? Will they be able to relate to them? If you have visual supports (such as a PowerPoint presentation) turn them into accompaniments of your stories.

When I know that I will make a question and answer session at the end of my presentation, from the beginning I ask the audience to write their questions throughout the talk. Speeding the Hiring Process

Do not Fix Your Mistakes Quickly

When I look back on our first hiring mistakes, the willingness to quickly dismiss mediocre employees is at the beginning of the listing. An average employee will not only cost you money, but it can also affect the whole structure of the company.

So the most compassionate act you can do when you notice that you made a mistake is to be transparent and fix it as soon as possible.

It's 2017, and I believe it is time to eliminate the term "human resources" of the vocabulary used in our organizations. It is degrading to the human who, in my opinion, deserves much better.

Humans are not a raw material

Small anecdote. A few years ago, my company was a finalist in the "Employee Mobilization" category for a prestigious Quebec competition. Unfortunately, we did not win. Nothing too dramatic, except that I am still marked by the speech of the president of the successful enterprise. 
He compared his "human resources" to the raw material for his business. My 25-year-old little guy could not understand how business as a model to follow could dehumanize his employees. I do not know about you, but I, when I think of raw material, I see rock and wood.

Since then, the term "human resources" has been banned from our organization.

Why worry so much about words? Because words have an impact than we think. If teams want to give more importance to the human dimension, then I believe that it's the least bit of not comparing their employee's too little resources.

Human resources. Financial resources. Material resources...

The human is on the same level as the rest. Really? A resource is disposable and replaceable. It is a very reductive vision of people which is nevertheless the main reason for the success of the organizations. I prefer to see the human being at the center of the strategy with resources at his disposal to help him build great things.

So, what is the ideal term? There is not one answer to this question. You know very well, nobody wants to feel like a number. Now, between being a resource and a number, I see no difference.

With us, the "human resources" department has been renamed to "culture and organization." We work with people, people, people, colleagues, teams, families, and so on. For example, managers will not say that they lack resources on their team, but rather that they lack people. It's simple, is not it?

Does that solve all the problems? Of course not. However, this approach has the merit of showing how important the organization recognizes the importance of its employees. People often ask me where to start to create a corporate culture as strong as that of SOFT. I always say that it starts with intention.

Recognizing that humans are not a "resource," I think it is an excellent first step.

The role of human resources is changing, and HR practitioners around the world should be pleased. What qualities of human resource development manager makes them more successful? 

It must be recognized that the traditional HR role was not the most rewarding. As part of my work, I meet with HR vice-presidents from different companies. Their common thread is that their role becomes less administrative, and they are increasingly vectors of innovation.

This is in line with a major trend: companies adopt a people-centered development strategy - they appreciate their employees and understand that they are the engine of profitability and competitiveness. They must train and retain their best talents and ensure that only the best candidates are hired. To do this, management needs to rely on the advice of its HR department. This increases the importance and value of HR professionals. "But you have to be sure to do things right," warns Hache-Barrois. "Otherwise there will be departures, and it will cost the company a lot."

According to her, for HR services to do their job well, they must be composed of people who possess the following traits.

1. Leadership, not micro-management

Do not immerse yourself. This irritates people and prevents them from feeling self-confident and feeling empowered in their work. "Leaders take care of individuals, managers supervise things," explains Hache-Barrois. HR must be flexible, must lead and guide with a cascading approach, she advises, and be sure that the staff will take things seriously. Inspire respect, do not demand it. Not everyone, however, has the bump of math, and jargon words such as "Big Data" and "analytic" may sound intimidating. Yet Hache-Barrois believes that we should not be afraid of statistics, but rather be enthusiastic about it because it is the best way to give HR the means to evolve beyond their administrative role And a more important strategy-creation function. A good HR professional must be the reference person when a new project starts. It must be able to suggest the most competent employees participate in the project.
