My start with affiliate marketing wasn’t what I expected. I didn’t follow a certain plan. You should avoid some Mistakes what everyone do.
When I first started in affiliate marketing, all I wanted was to just make money. Off I ran in every direction, trying everything, with no real idea of the mistakes I was making that could very well affect my chances at long term success.


Through my years of experience with both affiliate marketing and teaching other affiliate marketers, I have come to the conclusion that there are 7 big mistakes new affiliate marketers make.
Let’s talk about these mistakes in more detail.

Failing To Create A Business Plan

Let’s face it, anyone can start a website. Heck, these days, you can make a great looking website for free and you don’t need to know a single line of computer code to do it! Since the barrier to entry is so low, there are a LOT of people starting websites and trying to become overnight affiliate marketer success stories. Yet, only a very tiny fraction of those people will ever succeed. Why?!

Because they failed to create a business plan!
With just about any other business, the aspiring entrepreneur may spend weeks, months, or even years preparing and perfecting the perfect business plan. It’s true, for most other businesses this HAS to be done in order to qualify for lending from banks. And that’s because banks know a business without a plan will almost always fail!

Think about it. If a ship is making a journey across the ocean, the crew must know exactly where to go and how to get there. If they just give the boat a push in the right general direction, they’ll never make it. So why should we expect this approach to work for something like growing a legitimate online business? You need a solid plan that is all mapped out for your to follow.

Not Testing

Whenever I choose to promote a Clickbank offer (for example), I put myself in the shoes of a potential customer and opt in to test the vendors’ follow up sequence.
I learned this the hard way.
Nothing breaks a reader’s trust more than being led to a promotion that will blow up their inbox. Put yourself in the shoes of a potential customer and see what will happen if they follow your advice.

Selling Rather Than Helping

Yes, the word “marketing” is part of the phrase affiliate marketing, but for the most part, our job as an affiliate is not to sell — that is the job of the sales page our affiliate links lead the reader to.
When I first started, my overwhelming (and totally naive) impulse was to fill my pages with words and links that screamed “BUY THIS NOW!”. I didn’t help the reader learn why they should have this product. I only wanted them to click a link which would hopefully lead to a commission for me.
People want to hear from other people when making a decision to buy a product or not — that’s why the reviews on Amazon products are so powerful. Those reviews are genuine feedback from people who (usually) have absolutely nothing to gain if someone buys that product or not.
When we talk more like an unbiased reviewer rather than a high-pressure salesperson, we will find we make more sales and people will come back for advice on other products in the future.

Too Many!

This is another big mistake I made when starting out — joining any and every affiliate program I came across. While I absolutely do believe in cultivating multiple streams of income when working online, there is a point where you have too much to deal with and it becomes unmanageable.
Choose your affiliate programs wisely and don’t overload yourself.

Not Tracking

This was a BIG mistake I made when I first started out. I began my affiliate marketing career using free-to-make web pages on a site called Squidoo (and I still do this to this day).

I am fond of promoting Amazon products on these pages, but would forget to use unique tracking affiliate links on each page.
Why is this a mistake? Very simple — when you make a sale, you want to know WHERE the sale came from. This enables you to know which pages are converting well so you can grow and scale that campaign.

Creating a unique tracking ID for an Amazon link is easy. Simply log in to your Amazon affiliate dashboard, click “Account Settings” at the very top on the right, then click “Manage Tracking IDs”. From there you can make a new tracking ID so you can track which web page/campaign sold what.  You can learn more about using Amazon’s Tracking IDs here.

Yes, making any commission is cool, but knowing where and how you made that commission is what makes you a better marketer. It lets you grow and scale your campaigns — as opposed to working blindly.

Make Money Online Products

Perhaps you’ve seen this before. You’re in a “learn online marketing” type forum. A person publishes a post complaining that they can’t make a dime online. But in their signature line they have something along the lines of “I Made 50 Million Dollars with This” followed by their affiliate link.
It happens all the time. Please, don’t be that person.
If you’re new and you want to promote products in the Make Money Online arena, don’t make false claims that it made you money. In fact, don’t make false claims at all!
Sure, talk about the benefits of the product/training — maybe even why it sounds awesome to you — but don’t try to trick people. You will ruin your credibility.

Writing For Search Engines

Yes, there are certain things you can do to help give yourself more exposure in the search engines. You might be familiar with the term search engine optimization (or SEO for short). While SEO is important, search engines are much smarter than they used to be and they are getting smarter FAST. Google (the #1 search engine by far) has consistently stated you should focus less on “SEO” and more on providing a great user experience. If you provide great content, they will come… and so will the search engines.
It’s also a really bad idea to rely solely on search engine traffic for your business. Google and other search engines like Bing and Yahoo change their search algorithms frequently. Many small online business owners have seen their affiliate business destroyed due to fluctuating search rankings. With so many possible traffic sources, never rely on just one.

Not Comparing

One of the best converting tactics I use to sell affiliate products online (especially physical products from Amazon) is to compare the “main” product with two other similar products.
When people are in buying mode for a physical product, they tend to have their options narrowed down to 2 or 3 and need help making the choice that is best for them.
By comparing the “3 Best Widgets For _______”, I not only help my readers make a choice, but I also have my affiliate links there for THREE products instead on only one.
Over time, when I track that web page, I will be able to see which product is most interesting to readers and move the best converting product to the top of the page for better CTR.
Comparison web pages are not only very popular and helpful for readers, they are also very profitable for you.

Lack Of Patience

When you consider that most new successful small businesses take 2 – 3 years to show profit, why should we expect an affiliate business to show profit in weeks? Fortunately, expenses for affiliate marketers are generally extremely low. That means, it is possible to see success much sooner than most other businesses. But you should plan to work for 6 to 12 months without seeing a dime before you expect to see profit.

You can believe me, or you can believe all of the “get rich quick” guru’s out there. What I’m telling you might not be what you want to hear, but in order to become successful, you must be willing to work for free. Later on, you’ll be rewarded with residual income for years. It’s an easy trade in the long-run.

“Oh Look! A Butterfly!”

This is the biggest downfall for any new affiliate marketer. In fact, it can cause really big issues for seasoned affiliate marketers as well.
It is all too common to be working on one thing when all of a sudden, something “shiny” comes through your inbox or is mentioned in a forum you frequent. Then off you go chasing some new idea to make money online.
Ignore the “butterflies” that are sure to fly by on a constant basis. They will just distract you from your project/campaign at hand. One completed and profitable campaign is worth so much more than 50 almost half-finished campaigns or projects.

Affiliate marketing is a business that requires self-motivation and focus. For many of us, these are learned skills. Once you are aware of the the mistakes that can cause a lack of profits and productivity, you will be better able to grow your business and be profitable long-term.

Not Collecting Email Addresses From DAY 1

I made this critical mistake on my first 5 affiliate websites. Whenever I think of email marketing, I instantly get flash backs to all of the spam I’ve had pile up in my inbox over the years. From male enhancement drugs to free vacations and even millions of dollars in some country I’ve never heard of from my long-lost uncle, we are all familiar with SPAM.

But facts are facts. Email marketing is one of the most valuable assets for affiliate marketers because it converts like crazy! Of course, that’s only if you do it right. How do you do it right? Once again… by providing REAL value to others. Don’t make every email a sales pitch. Actually provide value to your email subscribers and treat them like gold, because many of your subscribers are worth much more than gold! If someone is receiving high quality and high value information from you through your email newsletter, for example, they will be much more willing to accept a product or service pitch every now and then. In fact, they are MUCH more likely to convert!

Email marketing is crucial and you should start collecting emails from day 1. As your list grows exponentially, so will your affiliate commissions.

Have you found yourself being discouraged because of your failed attempts at affiliate marketing within the past? It’s very easy to understand that you probably don’t stand a chance when it come to online marketing because there’s only a few that actually succeed. 1. Most people fail at affiliate marketing because they don’t simply understand the power of testing various offers.
To be honest, it doesn’t matter how great you think the offer is or the potential profits it can bring. If you don’t do your due diligence and start testing plenty of available products out there, you won’t know which one will bring the highest conversions and revenue. Testing out offers is very simple to do, all you would need to accomplish is switching out the products within a particular promotion of the same audience, and compare the results. Make sure you allow an ample amount of people and time in order to gain exposure to the promotion, and you’ll get better results that way. Your main goal is to figure out which offer will not only have high conversion, but also bring in more profit. Spend time by doing a bit of research to see which is the best fit for you.


2. Most people don’t succeed at affiliate marketing because they don’t have a solid strategy in place.
If you plan on being successful at anything, you’re going to need a gameplan that will lead the way. Developing an overall strategy that suits your goal is key, or else you’ll be sidetracked in performing useless activities. There are plenty of people that fail at affiliate marketing because when one strategy doesn’t work out, they automatically throw in the towel. Your goal and plans have to be realistic, and don’t fool yourself thinking that you’ll achieve a six figure income within a 3 month period. All of this can be avoided if you decide to stick with a plan, and commit to your goal until it’s finally achieved. If you don’t see the results that you’d hope for, then it’s obvious that you need to switch up strategies until you find something that works.

3. Most people fail at affiliate marketing because they don’t set specific action steps for their goals.
Being able to adopt a strategy in place for your affiliate marketing efforts isn’t enough, you must know the exact steps as well. A good amount of soon to be affiliate marketers fail because they have no clue on how to get started. Mapping out specific action steps for your goal is an absolute necessity if you are to stand a chance within this industry. Keep things simple by writing them out, and keeping a schedule of all your action steps. You’ll be surprised on just how effective this small piece of advice will be for your business.

4. Most people find themselves failing at affiliate marketing because they aren’t motivated.
When you’re pursuing any type of business venture, your mindset and mentality will either spring you towards success, or be your worst enemy. Most business owners have an incredible ability to see failure as an opportunity for growth. If you start looking in a more positive light, you’ll understand that everything you do is a learning experience.

5. Most people drop out of affiliate marketing because of information overload.
If your an experienced online marketer, you’ll soon realize that the opportunities to make money is endless. It seems like there are new products or software that spring into existence every minute, and it’s very easy to get caught up in the hype. Don’t ever waste your time on things that sound too good to be true, such as a click button software that will make you a millionaire overnight. Affiliate marketing is a real business, and mastering the fundamentals is key towards success. Stick with something that works, and stop pursuing the next big fad.
