Avoid/Minimize Slang

Some common slang that appears in Business papers includes: “corporate ladder,” “ducks in a row,” “touch base,” and “bring to the table.”  While these still might be verbally acceptable in the business world, they should be avoided in written communications.

Poor Choice: “Most workers at Company XYZ try hard to climb the corporate ladder.”

Better Choice: “The majority of workers at Company XYZ strive to advance their careers there.”

If you do feel that it's appropriate to use slang to better communicate an idea or message, use it sparingly and place “quotation marks” around the word or phrase to let the reader—which includes your professor—know that you are aware that it is slang.

Wordiness & Passive Verbs

More is not necessarily better when it comes to writing. This is especially true when you are writing about topics with which the “average reader” may not be familiar. Be clear and concise and use active verbs whenever possible. Engage the reader and make it relevant to him/her.

Poor Choice: “On September 13, 1945, the XYZ Company was founded by John Doe for the purpose of providing farmers with crop-dusting services that were very much in need at that time.”

Better Choice: “John Doe founded the XYZ Company in September of 1945 in order to provide farmers with much-needed crop-dusting services.”
Notice that the verb in the second example is active: “John Doe founded…” In the first example, it is passive: “…XYZ Company was founded by…”

Graphs/Charts/Tables/Bulleted Lists

Use these items in support of your writing rather than in place of it. Graphs, charts, and tables can help support or strengthen a point visually, but they cannot and should not replace the written word in research papers.
Don't over-rely on bulleted lists either. Remember that you are writing an academic paper and not a memo or PowerPoint slideshow for a presentation.

There’s a reason why so many copywriters use numbers in their headlines. It works.

Do an experiment: Go to the grocery store, and scan the magazines in the checkout lane. Look at the front-page article headlines. It doesn’t matter if it’s a fitness magazine or a tabloid; many of them will be using numerals to start off the headline.

There aren’t really any rules (as far as I know) regarding what numbers work best, but people typically only remember three to five points. That said, sometimes a really obscure number like 19 or 37 can catch people’s attention.

Use interesting adjectives

Here are some examples:

• Effortless
• Painstaking
• Fun
• Free
• Incredible
• Essential
• Absolute
• Strange

Use unique rationale

If you’re going to do a list post, be original. For example consider the following:

• Reasons
• Principles
• Facts
• Lessons
• Ideas
• Ways
• Secrets
• Tricks

If possible, never use things. Please, for the love of Pete, don’t use things. You can do better than that.

Use what, why, how, or when

These are trigger words. I typically use “why” and “how” the most, because I’m often trying to persuade or enable someone. Typically, you’ll use either a trigger word or a number. Rarely does it sound good to do both?

Make an audacious promise

Promise your reader something valuable. Will you teach her how to learn a new skill? Will you persuade her to do something she’s never done before? Will you unlock an ancient mystery?

What you want to do is dare your reader to read the article. Without over-promising, be bold. Be seductive (in the most innocuous way possible, of course). Be dangerous. And then deliver what you promised.

Try this formula

Here’s a simple headline-writing formula:

Number or Trigger word + Adjective + Keyword + Promise

Example: Take the subject “bathing elephants.” You could write an article entitled, “How to Bath an Elephant” or “Why I Love Bathing Elephants.”

Or you could apply this formula and make it: “18 Unbelievable Ways You Can Bathe an Elephant Indoors”

Another (more serious) example: Take a bold promise like “selling your house in a day.”

Apply the formula and you get: “How You Can Effortlessly Sell Your Home in Less than 24 Hours”

People don’t want to be tricked into reading something boring; they want to be drawn into something exciting. Make it worth their while.

Take extra time to consider what headline will grab people’s attention the most, and make sure that it describes your content in an honest, but attractive, way. They won’t regret it, and neither will you.

It is much harder to write a short rather than a long paper. Professors, therefore, do not ask you to write only six to eight pages, because they assume you cannot produce more on the topic. They do so because they are convinced you cannot write less than six. The important thing to know is, a text that is too long can be easily shortened, but a text that is too short's hard to lengthen.

Most writers will have trouble with writer's block at some point in their lives. The possible reasons for writer's block are myriad: fear, anxiety, a life change, the end of a project, the beginning of a project... almost anything, it seems, can cause that debilitating feeling of fear and frustration. 1. Implement a Writing Schedule.

In fact, don’t be hard on yourself at all while writing. Anna Quindlin wrote, “People have writer’s block not because they can’t write, but because they despair of writing eloquently.” Turn the critical brain off. There are a time and place for criticism: it’s called editing.

3. Think of Writing as a Regular Job, and Less as an Art.

Stephen King, a famously prolific author, uses the metaphor of a toolbox to talk about writing in On Writing, intentionally linking it to physical work. If we think of ourselves as laborers, as craftsmen, it’s easier to sit down and write. We’re just putting words on the page, after all, one beside another, as a bricklayer puts down bricks. At the end of the day, we’re just creating things — stories, poems, or plays — only we use vocabulary and grammar instead of bricks and mortar.

4. Take Time Off If You've Just Finished a Project.

Writer's block could be a sign that your ideas need time to gestate. Idleness can be a key part of the creative process. Give yourself time to gather new experiences and new ideas, from life, reading, or other forms of art, before you start again.

5. Set Deadlines and Keep Them.

Many writers, understandably, have trouble doing this on their own. You might find a writing partner and agree to hold each other to deadlines in an encouraging, uncritical way. Knowing that someone else is expecting results helps many writers produce material. Writing groups or classes are another good way to jump-start a writing routine.

6. Examine Deep-Seated Issues Behind Your Writer's Block.

Write about your anxieties regarding writing or creativity. Talk to a friend, preferably one who writes. 1. Make sure your message is simple and clear.

1. Take notes

Creativity and innovation can not be planned. Ideas can come out of nowhere, often at the most inopportune times (see the shower, above). Be prepared to capture those ideas when they occur, rather than forcing them to be created later.

Keep a notebook and a pen or recording device by the bed, in the kitchen, on your desk. Use Evernote on your computer, tablet, and/or smartphone. This free application contains information from everywhere and compiles correctly in one place for later retrieval by keyword search.

2. Treat freewriting

This technique is designed to prime the pump, to get something flowing, even if it does not make any sense.

4. Play with your pet

Not writing when you think it must be written creates a tension that actually closes the flow of creativity. This creates more stress and keeps pace.

Follow up on your brainstorming meetings with innovation teams. These teams can be anywhere from two to four people who take the ideas generated in the reflection sessions and make them work.

Circle back to the entire team with progress reports, which keeps the flow of creative flow and rewards people for taking action. Collaboration can occur either in person or in a virtual environment, using one of the many electronic tools available for online meetings, another saving of time and money to add to your arsenal.

10. Take risks

To succeed, people must be free to fail. If you and your people are afraid of taking risks, you will be able to plod through your days of work without much enthusiasm and excitement.

With nothing to fuel your creativity, your marketing goals (and, ultimately, your business) will wither.
