Can money buy happiness? Money can't buy happiness, but it can make your misery a little more comfortable. Will becoming rich make you happy? How does a person’s amount of wealth affect their general well-being? Studies say it's true to some extent—but chances are you aren't getting the most bang for your buck.

These are some of the questions that Dr. Ryan T. Howell tried to find out.

An assistant professor of psychology at the San Francisco State University, he conducted a study to know the role of finances and consumption in people’s happiness and general quality of life.

Below are five facts that his research discovered after analyzing thousands of participants in the Personality and Well-Being Lab at the university.

1. Credit card debt is an enemy of happiness.

There’s joy in buying something we like. However, that happiness is short-lived if the purchase would later put us in debt.

According to Dr. Howell, the financial stress of having unpaid credit card debts will always overpower the momentary enjoyment of experiencing retail therapy.

Thus, if you want to become happier, it’s a good idea to focus on paying all your credit card debts first.

2. Spending on others creates happiness.

People who spend a portion of their income towards charities and buying gifts for loved ones have a happier disposition than those who don’t.

Indeed, money can buy happiness, but only if you spend it on other people.

Several studies have also arrived at the same conclusion. One of them is Michael Norton, who conducted a social experiment, whose results he shared in this TED Talk.

3. Happy people invest on experiential purchases.

Happy people spend more on meaningful life experiences than buying stuff that has no other purpose but to satisfy their desire of owning it.

For example, enrolling in a dance class with your spouse would make both of you happier than buying a flat screen TV because you only want to impress your neighbors or friends with it.

Dr. Howell notes that buying stuff that will help create meaningful experiences with your loved ones are also good. As such, purchasing that television so you can have movie bonding sessions with your spouse is acceptable.

4. Never buy something just to impress others.

A lot of people make unnecessary purchases because they have this weird expectation that it will impress their friends and consequently, get compliments for it; and thus making them feel good.

This mindset of your putting your happiness in the hands of others often leads to disappointment because people don’t always react the way we want or expect them to.

The research shows that those who are true to themselves and draw their happiness internally have a better disposition in life than those who expect happiness to come externally.

5. Tangible goals make saving money easier.

When asked, people say that it feels good when they’re able to save money. So why can’t more people save? Because spending money also feels good.

Thus, Dr. Howell advises that if you want to have a stronger motivation to save, you need to set a clear financial goal. This way, you can visualize that future purchase to fight off the temptation of an impulsive purchase.

For example, let’s say that you want to save money for a one-week family beach vacation.

When you’re tempted to buy a pair of shoes because it’s on SALE, imagine buying plane tickets instead. Then imagine your whole family having fun at the beach. The craving to buy those shoes on impulse can quickly go away.

Becoming rich cannot guarantee happiness. However, practicing good financial habits, learning the proper mindset about wealth, and spending your money on the right things can help you find long-lasting joy and contentment in life.

If you think you will only achieve happiness when achieving your goals, you will lose motivation, and you will feel unhappy in your work.

Most of us, at one point or another, think that we will be happy once we reach a particular goal. We believe: "I'll be happy once:

How to be happy on the road to success.

I know, I've been guilty of doing it too. Many times I have assumed that satisfaction and success will come after you win a championship or create a successful business. 

Society tells us that this is a good thing. We hear about athletes who are never completely satisfied until they get to be the best. We hear about entrepreneurs who worked like crazy to build a business that changed the world. The basic idea behind this mentality is that to be motivated, you need to be dissatisfied. Unsatisfied with winning the second place. Unsatisfied with being average. 

There is also the other side of the equation: people who are happy with life as it is today. Commonly, they say that you must develop the ability to "no longer want." You can be happy exactly as you are now. That you are already perfect just the way, you are.

The problem

Here's the problem: I want both, be motivated and be happy. And maybe you want the same thing. 

I like being happy. It's fun. And I do not want to delay my happiness until I reach my goal; But at the same time, I like to improve continuously. I do not want to settle for less than I can do in this life. I would like to be happy along the way and also achieve my goals. 

For a long time, I was bothered by the fact that being happy (feeling satisfied) and being motivated (feeling dissatisfied) could not complement each other. I have not figured it out yet, but the more I study successful people, the more I think it is possible to be happy and motivated at the same time. I tell you how...

Motivated and happy

Let's start with motivation. If you want to maximize your potential, you will need to continue working on being better before and after reaching your goal. 
And why would anyone do that? For example, if your goal is to earn a million dollars and you made it, why would you keep working hard after it? The answer is more complicated than you think.

The Rule of Declining Returns

In Economics, there exists a fundamental principle known as the Rule of Declining Returns. The short definition: as you get more of something, it becomes less valuable. And this is not only an economic theory, but it is also a trend in real life. 

If you have zero USD and win $ 100,000, then it will be something important. But if you've already won a million, earning another $ 100,000 will not be as significant. Winning each weight means a lot at first, but loses its value over time. 

If you've never earned a championship, the first one you win will be incredible. But if you already have five championship rings, adding a sixth will not be as sweet as when you received the first one. Staying at the top means a lot at the beginning, but less as time passes. 

If you are starting a business, getting your first customer is an incredible dose of adrenaline. But if you already have 100 clients who pay you, adding one more will not provide the same excitement. Getting a new customer means a lot in the beginning, but less with time. 

In other words, the goals and outcomes that seem so valuable in the beginning, actually lose their value as you achieve more of them.

How to stay motivated

So if the results mean less as you achieve more, how can you keep motivation? Loving the practice of what you do. Only people who adopt their work as an art and fall in love with their daily performance are those who remain motivated in time. 

Here are some examples: 
Richard Branson is already a billionaire. He has built hundreds of companies. But he does not continue to do it for money; It ceased to mean much to him long ago. He continues to do so because he loves the practice of running it. 

Football coach Nick Saban has already won four national championships. Earn $ 5 million a year. He is no longer a coach for money or winning games. Follow coach because he loves the process. 

Fitness and nutrition expert Jack LaLanne has set eligibility records for over 40 years. He does not continue exercising to lose weight; He uses every day because he loves him. 

Conclusion: The only way to stay motivated before and after achieving goals is to enjoy the practice of what you do.

How to be happy?

Guess what? The answer is now simple. If you like to practice what you do, if you love your daily work, then you can be happy before and after achieving goals. 

When you learn to love the process of what you do, and you do not focus on the goal, you automatically find happiness and stay motivated. 

If you learn to love practicing exercise, you will be happy today, and you will see results tomorrow. If you love the practice of running your business, you will be happy today, and you will see results tomorrow. If you learn to love the practice of supporting your family and friends, you will be happy today and see results tomorrow. 

Happy and motivated. One more reason why the system is better than the result.

What does happiness mean to you? Everybody has their own definition of happiness including me. Why I'm not happy? I will do anything to put a smile on another person's face because I want to be happy & it makes me happy, for sure I'll be happy if I can bring a little smile to others life. I'm not sure what is happiness means to me. But by the age and my the situation I am standing, I can assure you that I'm not happy. I have build a good career, I have managed to make a lot of money, maybe just like a millionaire, But still I'm not happy.

This is what I'm saying that I have a lot of money, I have everything I wanted to have, but still don't have the happiness. But only a few weeks ago, I was really very happy and there were no problem with my life, in fact I didn't feel it, maybe this Is why I was happy. I believe circumstances can certainly make life unhappy. Perhaps something, something What MEANS MY LIFE, maybe missing from my life, but I can't recognize what it is.

I know its ok to not be happy all the time or everyday, but Everyone should be happy or everyone deserve to be happy once in every three days. Here "happy" doesn't means only the simple happiness. The word means here "about the real happiness". Something what make my heart filled with peace, something what make me smile, something what absorb my pains, something what establish and stay for my inner peace.

So define what happiness means to you, what thing will make you happy, and stop chasing happiness, instead do the task what can make you happy.

• Why I'm not happy with myself?

The reason you are not happy is because isn't suppose to make happy. Money ISN'T happiness nor will it EVER bring happiness. We as humans think that the key to success or life or money but boy are we wrong!
Because there are many things in this world which I cannot buy with money. For example Parents, Love, happiness, satisfaction, friends, relationship etc... I have a lot of things, a lot of money but I don't have happiness, because there are no store to sale this thing.

I'm unhappy because I'm not fulfilled, maybe something my heart needs to keep it calm, but I can't achieve it or I don't know what is. Then what should I do? 
I have made a short list to recover from circumstances. Take a look:

• The very first thing to do is, finding the reason why I'm not happy?
• There must have some problem, I'll get it.
• Share with someone who is close enough to know if there does'nt have any privacy concern.
• Resolve the problem alone if possible or take help from others.
• Bring the thing in life what can fulfill the happiness.

• Why I'm not happy with my life?

It'd be a lie to say that money doesn't buy happiness. It does - to a point.
Yes money can buy happiness on some condition, if the money can be used wisely. It seems that human beings can never be satisfied with the amount of money they make, and that dissatisfaction often leads to unhappiness.
The essence of human behavior, We're never satisfied. 
Here are some key points that will show you why I'm not happy:

• I'm chasing the money. I always want more, its natural thing, being human. (as revealed in many survey in US and UK) 
• Aim to earn more (most people do) but don't get lost in this never ending path (most people do).
• I'm jealous of other money, If anyone makes more than me, I'm hitting me up to become richer than the person. 
• I'm expecting more than I have, the cycle won't stop.

• Still I don't believe the truth is "I cannot get everything with just money."
• I'm feeling depressed for very not getting very little things.
• I'm always in depression because of my relationship with everyone out there, and I'm revoking myself to social to unsocial.

The truth is "The search for happiness will only end when one meets the source of happiness, the Supreme God."
 
In this circumstances what can I do to become happy? How can I achieve happiness? There must have some solution of every problem, and I'm sure it exist for this one too. I believe its possible to be happy with or without money. It doesn't matter how much money I have or what is my salary scale. Happiness never required a good or perfect career. So equating both the statements I hereby disprove the statement made in the question you can dream of happiness but if you want to make it real or not it is up-to you.

Someone who complains about having just lost his/her job should talk to the guy who just lost his limb from a car accident. Someone who complains about his/her parents being naggy should speak to a recently orphaned child, who has no parents to speak of.

Help someone in need

Do you have a lot of free time in your hands? Sometimes, true experience can be experienced in abundance by actually helping someone in need. It’s selfless, pure and it can bring an instant halo on your head when you look at yourself in the mirror!
It could be your friend, a lady carrying two huge grocery bags, or a child who needs help building something, or a charity.

You don’t always have to help someone like a boy scout, but when you walk past someone who needs help and you hesitate just a second wondering if you should help, go right ahead and help them! Even a smile from a stranger filled with gratitude can make your day.

Embrace Fear and Act Anyways

What is fear really? Examine it every time it happens in your life. This is important because isn’t this one of the greatest roadblocks we all encounter?

Fear is always about something in the future (afraid of an outcome that hasn’t happened yet… and may never even happen) and could also be routed on still attaching with the past.
Because of that definition, fear does not live in the present moment…. it can’t… it’s not possible!

We fear a future outcome, we fear what people will think of us, we fear getting hurt, we fear losing money, we fear negative things that have not yet happened…. we fear events or outcomes that haven’t happened.

So you see, how can you really fear anything if you only live in the present moment?

Fear will never go away, as it’s there to keep us alive too… to give us caution in what present moment steps we take, and that is good. Just don’t let it rule your life or prevent happiness. Don’t act out of fear of the future, act out of what is the right thing to do in the present. Even worse, don’t avoid action because of fear. Embrace it… and realize it doesn’t truly exist or have any power over you right now.

Detach From Everything… Everyone… Right Now

Your happiness is no longer dependent on whether you have something or someone in your life. You no longer care about what other people say or think about you.

Now you can fully appreciate the time spent with them in the present moment. Detach from caring what others think about you or want from you. Be yourself because of how you want to live your life, not by the expectations of others. Living to other’s expectations will only leave you lacking fulfillment (feeling empty) in your life, and will only drain you as people will always want more from you.

Live to the beat of your own music, smile, laugh… and let everyone else wonder why you are so happy all the time!

Happiness Practice… Practice… Practice

This is the most important step.
None of this is easy and it will take some practice and daily reminders. The only way is to really put any of this to action and get better at doing it, is with simple daily practice. No one ever just masters it all at once, as life is an ongoing  journey full of continual change (which is the only constant), not some destination.

That is what meditation is really. Just taking time out to slow down, quiet the noise and use some little cues (like noticing your breathing) to bring you back into the present moment. To help re-center yourself before you get too far off track.
So if daily happiness is your goal, you have to practice it.

You can make up your own “present moment alarm”, something to remind you to focus on what is happening right now in your mind. It could be just waking up and starting the day off with peace and quiet for 10+ min (too many of us start it off with just “noise” from the radio and TV). Maybe it is driving the car with no radio on (and getting rid of some of that traffic stress too). It could be making time for a 10min walk everyday outside in nature (especially barefoot in the grass). Just find ways you can focus on being aware of the present moment. Pretty soon you will just be living in that continual moment more often, and that is where true happiness lives and fear/ worry/ anger/ jealousy/ greed/ doubt/ depression can not get in.

Happiness can be learned, but finding meaning and a purpose in life is what leads to it, not the other way around. The happiest people appreciate and realize that being happy adds years to their life, and life to their years.

You will find happiness in small things because happiness is with you. You will find happiness in small things because you are learning to be still and observant. A state of happiness isn't a frantic trek. It's a slow journey of self-discovery. "It's all about how we handle the situations we are in, when we're in them,". With the right positive attitude and supportive people by your side, you can find contentment and happiness in everyday living -- you deserve it.

Ideally you would form a happiness habit for the morning, one during the day, and one before you sleep. This way you stay happy throughout the day. If your day is really busy then just do something every morning and every night. If even twice a day is too much, start with just on happiness habit a day – either morning or night. 

The good news is that while the road to happiness will be filled with twists and turns, you can learn how to find happiness with little steps that you can take every day.

What does Happiness look like (how do you recognize when you find it)?

Where Am I Right Now?

The only way I was able to move forward towards a happy life was by recognizing exactly where I was in my dark moments.  Learning how to find happiness only happens once you can figure out what is wrong with the present time. Once you take a good hard look at your life as it is today, it is easier to figure out what is missing. You need to create your own roadmap to move towards a different location. So ask yourself, “where am I now?” Try figuring out what about your life needs improvement.

How to find the most happiness

The first one I'm going to tell you from my life; I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead. Tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.

The long term changes in your psyche from just one repeated daily action is probably under-rated. After gratitude journalism for a few months, I started to experience sudden moments of pure joy that descended on me of the blue.

Put yourself first

Keeping yourself emotionally and physically healthy has a huge impact on the state of your happiness. McDonough suggests doing some form of physical exercise every day, whether it's hitting the gym or heading outdoors. Perhaps you can walk your dog before work, or take your child to the playground after dinner for some unwinding time.

"It's a great stress reliever and will do wonders for your emotional and physical well-being." When you learn to be good to yourself, you begin to assert self-confidence and others will treat you with more respect than ever before.

Supportive pals in challenging times

In the last year I have experienced many tough situations, from brain surgery to the end of a long-term relationship to the loss of a very important family member, and the thing that brings me the greatest joy is the fact that at only 28 years old I have the incredible opportunity to be able to acknowledge all of those people who have carried me through these difficult times.

Not many people at my age are given the chance to stop and really take a look at their life -- I have been given this gift in my very early years, so that I can stop and make the changes necessary to choose happiness in my life. Edit your definition of success

Avoid measuring your successes against someone else's standards. It's a no-win situation. Instead, set goals you would like to achieve and keep them manageable, simple and interesting enough so you stay focused.

"Don't expect to be perfect. Setting reasonable goals for yourself is key if you want to live a happy life – otherwise what you do will never be enough," says McDonough. For example, if you're a couch potato who wants to get moving again, set a goal of running a 5K – not a marathon. That way, your goal won't seem insurmountable and you will have a better chance of achieving it without getting discouraged.

Remove "should have" and "what if" from your vocabulary

Having thoughts such as "I should be married by this age" or "what if I had chosen that job instead of the one I currently have?" only hinders your happiness and puts undue pressure on you. Clear away that mental clutter.

These nagging, persistent thoughts are generally a waste of time and energy and are often focused on things that are in the past. Shake them off and you'll have more energy to devote to following your passions and fulfilling your dreams for the future.

Keeping negative thoughts and feelings bottled up inside will only cause you stress and worry. A reliable network of people who are close to you will help you face challenges and celebrate successes. 

Ditch the drama

We all have friends and family members in our lives who seem to be addicted to drama. Every event appears to be an ordeal and, by extension, you manage to get entangled.
Unravel yourself from their mess. While you can lend an ear of support and offer a few words of wisdom, you can't solve their problems, no matter how good your intentions are.
