If you’re starting to get serious about blogging, it always helps to have an editorial calendar and an idea of where you want to take your blog. So planning is a must-have technique for every blogger.

Today I thought I’d share the nine tools I use every single day as a blogger. For me, these are the must-haves in my blogging toolbox!

Blog Topic Generator

Some writers would not admit, but many struggles when it comes to creating titles for their work. Titles are important especially since readers would look at the titles before they even spend time looking the first part of the text. With Hubspot’s blog topic generator, you no longer have to think as to what blog title you should use. You can just provide the files with nouns that you want to write about, and the platform generates relevant titles that you can use.

Writeapp.net

With a busy and hectic schedule, it's hard when you have to write and edit something when you are on the go. But thanks to Writeapp, you can quickly work on your project. This tool has a cursor track-pad that makes it easier for you to view and select certain texts with accuracy. The tool also allows you to secure what you have written with its passcode lock feature. And with full tag support, you can organize your notes using tags. With this application, you can view and edit your work anytime and anywhere since you can sync your files on Dropbox.

JetPack Stats for evaluating posts

JetPack is super simple and definitely a tool I use everyday {multiple times every day if I’m honest}. For me, JetPack Stats is less about page views and more about referral sources. For example, Pinterest is my top referral source after search engines. I often click on the links to the pins in my reference list and leave a quick comment on the pin to thank the pinner for sharing my post. I also use JetPack to share older posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. When a post from a year or two ago is viewed multiple times in a day, I will share that link via social media. And I always make a note of the search engine terms leading to my blog — this is an excellent way to know what to write!

Picmonkey for images

Picmonkey is my go-to photo editing and designing tool of choice. I do have the “royal” membership which costs $33 per year and gives me access to all the fonts and extras available. But the free membership will do everything most bloggers need. With Picmonkey you can add text to images, create collages, and even use a blank canvas to make your own graphics from the elements they offer. I use Picmonkey every day for blog post images as well as buttons for my sidebar, Facebook cover images, Instagram posts, etc.

Pinterest for exploring post ideas and updating graphics 

Pinterest, as I mentioned above, is a fabulous referral source for me. But I also use Pinterest for research. Did you know you can see what posts have been pinned from your website? Go to www.pinterest.com/source/designbyinsight.net {insert your blog name in place of ours}. I check this every day for all the sites I write for. I want to know if my posts are pinning — and what other posts from those sites were particularly popular. This helps me formulate post ideas and determine what sort of graphics are pinning well. I also check this for my personal blog as well for the same reasons. However, I have found an additional benefit to checking Pinterest this way: updating post images. If you started blogging pre-Pinterest, you remember we didn’t always add text to our images. When I notice a post is pinned without a text-enhanced picture, I make a priority of updating the image.

Google Analytics for evaluating posts

Google Analytics is my go to research point for my blog. The most important information I get from Analytics is the referral information. Analytics provides far more detail in this area than JetPack. I mainly use this information to determine how much impact posts I write on other sites has on my blog. For example, besides DBI, I write for three other sites every month. I track the referrals from these sites. I have used this information to determine if I should continue to write for specific sites. Another great piece of information I gain from Analytics is behavior flow … what are readers doing when they get to my site.

Feedly for reading blogs

I subscribe to over 300 blogs via RSS. Obviously, I don’t get those in my inbox every day. {Yikes! Can you imagine?} My reader of choice is Feedly. I tried several different readers when Google Reader was discontinued and landed on Feedly because it looks great on my computer, my iPad, and my iPhone and has all the functionality I needed including the ability to save and share. I have all the blogs I subscribe to divided into categories so I can quickly scan ones on different topics.

Pocket for saving information

As a social media coach, I often read articles I want to save for future reference. As a blogger, it is common for me to read a post I want to mention to my readers or on social media. As a speaker, I like to save illustrations and statistics to use in talks. But I don’t like to have all this information in my bookmarks or email. Hello, Pocket! I just add all those posts and articles and images to my Pocket where I can tag them for easy searching later. And, one of my favorite features of Feedly is the ability to save posts to Pocket.

Instagram for sharing posts and more

I LOVE Instagram! It is my very favorite social media site. There are countless ways I use it {and even more ways I have noticed others using it}. The two main uses I have for IG are sharing posts {which means I need square images!} and testing out post ideas. The first one is pretty self-explanatory, but here is what I do with the second. Often I share a quote or thought I’ve had after reading a book or listening to a talk. I gauge response to those posts to determine if they are the type of idea worth expanding into a blog post. IG is also an excellent way to connect with others and build community.

Taking your creativity online means adapting from scrawling in notepads to rearranging your thoughts for an audience. The ways you can translate this information is endless; today, I show you how to organize your blog content from start to finish using online tools.

MARKETING FUNNELS

CONVERTKIT

This is the number one marketing tool I use to grow my online business. ConvertKitis next level when it comes to email marketing providers; I can’t believe how my email list keeps growing and growing since switching from MailChimp. To help you get your head around the differences: ConvertKit is subscriber-based, MailChimp is list-based.

In ConvertKit, my subscribers can sign up to many content upgrade forms without duplicating across several different lists. I can provide my audience with new resources and not waste time moving anyone over to my ‘Master List’ in MailChimp.

CLICKFUNNEL

I first heard about ClickFunnel when I attended a Grace Lever webinar, she’s basically the #girlboss of ‘doing’ and empowering female entrepreneurs. Her ClickFunnel pages convert — and that’s because it’s an awesome marketing tool for small business. If you don’t know much about sales and marketing funnels, Moz has some really great tips for new and old marketers interested in inbound marketing.

GOOGLE TOOLS

I can’t stress this enough: you need a content calendar. It will transform the way you see your work and help you effectively plan out each type of blog content. No doubt, we could all do this better, but we need to stay relevant and top of mind to our audience.

There are two ways I do this to stay on track each month. I plan my content in depth quarter-by-quarter, and I have a rough idea of my strategy for half the year.
I do this using Google Excel and my handy Editorial Calendar template. My tip: work vertically, not horizontally. It gives you a better high-level view of your content for the year.

I know a lot of creativepreneurs prefer the pen and paper — I do love my bullet journal — however, when I want to move around blog posts and email marketing depending on the way my week looks, this calendar is perfect for me (get it below!).

The other way to organize content I’ve found really effective is Google Calendar. If Excel confuses you, using the drop-and-drag, Google Calendar really helps when sorting a month’s worth of content.

Here’s an example from my former Sydney-based lifestyle blog. The initial launch month was in September 2015. I transitioned this over from (another) personal blog into a more well-rounded lifestyle/Sydney blog last year. It became mildly successful and performed well on Google, but the direction was lost in all the personal. It came back to where the heart is: creating.

It’s incredibly simple to set up your own Google account if you haven’t already, and with it comes a world of other useful resources, including Gmail, Google Drive, and Google +.

FRESHBOOKS

As a small business owner, you need a top notch accounting system (I ignored this when I started my online biz and OH BOY, I WAS WRONG). FreshBooks is perfect for small business owners that want to grow their biz, but also if you’re looking for an easy to use solution.

FreshBooks helps you to get organized and get paid. You can track your client hours, log your expenses (I got a lot of them!) and invoice your clients quick.

Buffer

The buffer is a game changer. Managing multiple social media accounts is not easy, but with Buffer you can schedule your tweets throughout the day with the time's Buffer deems most appropriate for your audience. In the Analytics section, you can Re-Buffer the tweets that received the most engagement at the click of the button and only add back into your queue.

DESIGN

CANVA

Now you don’t need to hire a graphic designer (or you may actually be one!), you can do it all yourself in a simple, mostly-free program taking the blogging world by storm — Canva. You design anything you can think of, from presentations to social media graphics to postcards. Basically, it’s all customisable, and you can get many of the pre-made designs for just $1. And Canva boasts, it only takes 23 seconds to learn.

There’s a new set of ten photos every ten days — you can subscribe here. You’ll find a lot of the images used on this blog are from Unsplash, with links to the respective artist pages. The collections are brilliantly curated; a current favorite is Workspace.

PLUGINS

YOAST SEO

The boss of plugins. It’s the most efficient way to quickly optimise your content and make the whole social media experience more pleasant. Yoast SEO does all the work for you. You pop in the keyword, and Yoast SEO scores your content based on frequency, images, page title, links, meta descriptions + more.

In the following article on money making apps we will discuss the current crop of websites that are offering incentives and money making opportunities. One thing about apps that pay you is you can make some extra cash online from your home, office, or even the local coffee shop.

Google Opinion Rewards

If you’ve been waiting for the standard option of survey-based apps, we finally have one for you here and it works a treat. Although only available for Android right now, you earn your money by answering simple survey questions.

All things considered, each answer gives by you through Google Opinion Rewards will be worth around 10 cents but can sometimes be as valuable as one dollar. During a test period, we saw somebody earn $100 so there’s certainly money to be earned.

Whenever you make money, you can put it towards future purchases within the Google Play store depending on whether you want movies, books, or songs. If you play an app such as Clash of Clans, you can even buy those in-game purchases you’ve been eyeing without putting in your own money.

Receipt Hog 

With the Receipt Hog mobile app, you simply take a picture of your receipt, get bonuses and redeem your coins for prizes. And the best news is it does not matter where you shop or what you buy.

Bitwalking

Bitwalking is a new app that lets you earn Bitwalking dollars (BW$) simply for going about your daily routine.

Launched in September last year, it’s still in a private beta phase – but you’re free to request an invite to the platform.

Once you get in, all you have to do is keep moving to start earning. You will need to do rather a lot of walking though – somewhere around 10,000 steps for 1 BW$. If you spend all day wandering around for your job anyway, however, what is there to lose?

At launch, the company said you’d be able to redeem your earnings against items offered through its own store or transfer the cash to your bank account. The service is still being tested though, so could be subject to change in the future.

InboxDollars 

Every year, companies are coming up with new ways to get their videos seen and one of the most recent tactics has been to use a third-party app like InboxDollars. Brands pay InboxDollars for consumer feedback.

After installing the app, you can watch videos and, every time you do, your account will be boosted with some credit. Ultimately, the companies pay InboxDollars to show their video before you earn a cut of the profit by watching them. What’s more, you even earn a $5 bonus just for signing up with your basic details.

And if you are even more motivated, you can refer friends and receive discounts and prizes based on what your friends qualify for as well.

iBotta 

Nowadays, the vast majority of us shop online so why not earn some money while doing so? After downloading the iBotta app, you can buy things you normally would including groceries before earning cash back rewards.

Over time, you’ll be asked to complete simple tasks like sending a picture of your receipt. Considering there are nearly 250 stores currently supported on the app, it provides you with ample opportunity to make money.

For example, we recently spoke to an individual who started buying their groceries using the app and they managed to earn $30 in cash back rewards in a little over a month.

Sure, this isn’t life-changing but it sure makes for a brilliant start and the money normally reaches the account within 48 hours. Once you start pairing this with other ideas on the list, you can really get going helping your finances with all these apps that make you money.

Snapwire

Snapwire is another image-based money-making app in this list, but it’s not quite the same as any of the others in this list as it puts the emphasis on the photographer, rather than just the photographs.

This isn’t so much an app for the everyday snapper as for the semi-pro/professional photographer.
There are two options for selling your photos: requests and challenges, or in a more conventional marketplace – though Snapwire hand-curates your best snaps, making them searchable and including them in the stock image database.

The requests and challenges route requires you to start as an ‘Explorer’ by submitting images to Snapwire Challenges to earn points. Once you’ve leveled up, you’ll be able to take part in paid buyer Requests or take direct commissions from clients.

Photographers keep 70 percent of earnings through the marketplace route.

Cash for Apps 

When looking for apps that pay you, this is another good one because you can get paid for installing certain apps onto your mobile device. Every day, the Cash for Apps app will have an ‘offerswall’ showing all the applications that come with rewards.

After you download them to your smartphone, you simply wait for your account to be credited before then deleting it again.

With Cash for Apps, it uses a points system and the earning potential might not be as strong as some other options we have here today. However, there are other ways to earn money such as referring friends to the app.

Currently, it’s available on iOS and Google Play; if you have an account on both, you can actually sync them together for a more immersive experience.

BookScouter

Earn money by selling your old books. This iOS and Android app allows you to scan or enter the barcode number to instantly compare buyback prices from leading book-buying websites. Choose the buyer offering the highest price and ship your book for free.

Registration is easy. Simply use your email address to create an account or log in through a host of eligible social networks.

WeGoLook

Although this app requires a little more work than some of the other apps we have here today, WeGoLook is a fantastic idea and offers the chance to earn some very good extra money.

As the name suggests, the WeGoLook app allows you to make yourself available to go and look at whatever users need. As a “Looker” you will typically be sent out to verify the condition of a car, boat, auction item, building, etc. If you already know about one of these, you’ll be able to use your expertise.

For example, someone nearby might be looking into buying a car but they aren’t sure of its condition. Therefore, they head onto WeGoLook and find yourself. From here, you head to the address, check the item on their behalf, and then return with feedback and earn some money. With most ‘Looks’, you can earn around $20 which isn’t bad for just a little work (and helping somebody out).

AppTrailers

Watch trailers of new apps spanning 30 seconds or less on your iOS or Android device and get paid for it. Earnings start at 500 points (50 cents) and can be redeemed for gift cards or cash via PayPal, according to Dailybucks.info. Another way to earn cash with this app: Upload videos and get likes.

LetGo 

We’ve all done it; holding onto clothes when we know there’s no way we’ll ever wear them again. Whether it’s a prom dress, sports shirt, favorite pair of shoes, or even just a pair of comfy jeans, we tend to hold onto clothing more than any other possession in life. With LetGo, you can finally…well, let it go.

As long as there are users within your neighborhood, you can sell your unwanted items for some easy money. Overall, the process is actually very simple from posting to conversing with buyers in a private chat. After talking to a buyer, you can arrange to have the second-hand item change hands before getting on with your life. Every year, we tend to hoard items we’ll never use again so this is a great money-making app as well as a space-saving app for your home.

Tap Cash Rewards

This Android app allows you to earn gift cards and cash for downloading, installing and playing the newest free games and apps; watching videos and completing simple tasks. After earning enough credits, you can redeem them for Amazon, Google Play gift cards or cash through PayPal.

Pact

Every year, we make a promise to ourselves to get in shape and start eating healthily. As June rolls around, half the year is gone and we wait until the next January to make the same promise in this never-ending cycle of events. Luckily, you now have more motivation than ever before because Pact will pay you for reaching workout and diet-related goals.

As long as you stick to your gym schedule and eat as you set out at the beginning, you can earn money and the app uses GPS and other apps to ensure you’re following the plan exactly.

At first, you might think this isn’t an opportunity to earn real money but we recently spoke to someone who has earned around $300 since downloading as he prepares for a Tough Mudder event.

Shopkick

This iOS and Android app shows you popular products and rewards at popular retailers and gives you kicks (points) for walking in the door, more for scanning items and even more for making purchases. Most rewards are worth 250 kicks, and 500 kicks equals $2. Create an account to set up your profile and then you’re ready to start.

FOAP

Foap is a mobile app that allows you to take pictures with your mobile phone and then sell them on Foap’s platform. And the money you make with this app can be substantial, as Foap offers 50% commissions.

iSay 

Sticking with the theme of surveys, this time we have an app that pays you on iOS. With the Better Business Bureau (BBB), iSay currently on an ‘A+’ rating which perhaps tells you all you need to know; at the very least, it tells you that this isn’t a scam.

In truth, the questions can also be fun and we were asked whether we preferred Cherry Coke or Coke as well as how often we visit the movies. Although you won’t get a place on every panel, you can earn around $5 for every 30 minutes you contribute.

Clashot 

Get paid by taking photos of art, cities, food and more with your smartphone and selling them on Depositphotos. Android and iOS users can sell photos for 50 cents to $80, and royalties average 44 percent per sale. Users are required to register an account at Clashot, share a photo with a complete description and a model release and complete a quick verification process to start selling.

Job Spotter 

Before we go any further with this one, Job Spotter, offered by Indeed, does not pay cash but you can earn store credit for Amazon which is essentially the same because it allows you to free up cash elsewhere in your budget.

In your community, there are numerous people looking for a job so you can earn credits by taking pictures of job ads/help wanted signs and the store before then posting them onto the app. Whenever you spot a job opportunity and it gets approved on the app, you can earn $.50. If you do this over a period of months, just think about how much extra money you would have, while simultaneously helping others find a new job.

Gigwalk 

When looking for apps that pay you, it’s always good to find one that allows you to leave the house. Of course, we have apps here today that require very little effort but it can also be beneficial to earn while walking around town or even walking the dog.

As a Gigwalker, you log into the task-based app and find the gig that suits your fancy. The gigs are relatively simple. For example, you could be asked to check the stock of a certain item within a store. With small tasks like this, you can earn between $3-$100 and you can withdraw the money using PayPal.

Clashot 

Available on both iOS and Android, Clashot lets you earn money by uploading and selling pictures on the app. Once your uploaded shots have been moderated by the team, they’ll be made available on ‘Depositphotos’ and you’ll get a percentage of the fee if it sells.

As you can see, this is a very good idea but it relies on good photography and promotion on your side. If you don’t, your picture could go unnoticed so this is important.

However, Clashot regularly run themes so pictures of this theme will help you to sell the images quicker. Of all the apps we’re providing today, this is the one with the least testing and reviews but you’re welcome to give it a go.

App Bounty 

At the other end of the scale, App Bounty has over 100,000 five-star ratings alone in addition to over five million installs on the Play Store. Just like Cash for Apps, you’ll be asked to download apps in exchange for credits. Every so often, the ‘offerwall’ will be updated with apps you can download and use for more credits. As long as you keep it for long enough to get the credit added to your account, you can then delete or even keep the app depending on whether you like it or not.

With App Bounty, we like the fact it’s an international program which means users and app makers from all over the world can be found within. At times, the process of building credits can seem a bit frustrating but the payments are reliable and you can obtain Amazon, Steam, and iTunes gift cards from the credits you earn.

Surveys On the Go

Get paid for sharing your opinions on various things, including the news, entertainment, sports, technology and more. Download the app on your iOS or Android device, sign up and complete all available demographic surveys. You’ll be notified when new surveys are available.

Pay ranges from 25 cents to $5 in cash for completing surveys, and it averages $1 each. When you reach $10, you can cash out through PayPal.

eBates 

Over the course of a year, we’ve seen numerous stories of how eBates’ users can earn a decent chunk of money. Traditionally, eBates is a website but they’ve recently launched an app where you can take advantage of cashback opportunities when shopping as well as in-store coupons.

Each quarter, you’ll receive a check through the post with a minimum of $5.01. In terms of ‘free money’ though, you won’t find much better than the $10 free gift when you sign up using an affiliate link.

You can earn $50 from eBates. Refer a friend to eBates and you will receive a $5 bonus for each friend you refer that makes a qualifying purchase ($25 minimum purchase). In addition to the $5 bonus, we will give you an extra bonus for the 2nd friend, referred from July 1, 2017 to September 30, 2017.

First friend: $5×1 = $5
Second friend: $5×2 + $40 = $50

BitMaker

In case you didn’t know, Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency making waves in the world right now. At launch, each Bitcoin was worth less than one cent but this has now risen to thousands and it’s a very profitable market for those who can get involved.

With BitMaker, you can watch ads in order to earn ‘blocks’. From here, you can convert the blocks into Bitcoin or Ethereum (another cryptocurrency).

At first, the payout is a little low but the balance will soon build up. In order to take advantage of this one, you need a Bitcoin ‘wallet’ as well as the equivalent for Ethereum if you choose to build this instead. By visiting the relevant websites, you can sign up for a wallet in no time.

And you can earn bonus blocks by referring friends, adding an additional level to this money making app.

Lyft 

Of course, Uber has been attracting much of the attention in recent times when it comes to driving for money but one that seems to have gone under the radar is Lyft. You can check out the new Lyft driver bonuses here.

Essentially, Lyft offers the same principle of driving people around and you’ll be eligible as long as you own a car less than a decade old and you’re older than 21 years of age.

Despite not being a ‘no effort’ type of money making app, Lyft is definitely an app that pays you and you get to do it all on your own time.

If you have a part-time job, Lyft is a great way to supplement your income.

As you start to gain a reputation, more riders will choose you and you’ll earn more money.

If you want to work nights, weekends, around the schedule of your children, or whatever it may be, you can do so with Lyft.

SavyConnect 

If you really are looking for an app that pays you for no effort whatsoever, look no further than SavvyConnect.

To get started, you’ll need to download software onto your device and it will be used for behavior research to see how you shop the market and surf online. Apart from that, there’s no ads to watch, nothing else to download, and you can go about your normal business.

For each month you keep the software installed, you’ll earn $5. If this doesn’t seem enough, you can also download the software onto your computer and tablet for $15 a month and $180 per year. Considering you have to do, quite literally, nothing to earn this money after initially downloading the software, this seems like a good deal to us.

OfferUp 

If you like to hoard items you’ll never use again, OfferUp is your second opportunity to sell for money.

As a local marketplace, you can place items up for sale for all those nearby to see. Normally, money making apps like these will take a cut of your selling price but OfferUp doesn’t do anything of the sort. As time goes on, more people are using the app to start a business with one antique seller making around $500 per month.

Mercari 

Mercari is another option but this time you’ll pay 10% of your profits for the ability to reach out to customers.

For most of us, there’s a drawer somewhere in the house full of old items we won’t use whether it’s clothing, sunglasses, bags, shoes, a lawnmower, or even a sofa you no longer use (the last two not in the drawer, of course).

Simply take a photo of the items you would like to sell, upload the image to Mercari, and you will have access to the company’s millions of users.

Stash 

Upon signing up, Stash will give you $5 immediately but this isn’t the only reason we like this investing app. Instead, we like it because it gives you an opportunity to invest your money in a world previously ruled by the ‘well-off’.

Rather than needing a degree just to get started, you can download the app and start your portfolio ensuring that you’re spreading risk across a variety of opportunities. To get started, creating an account takes a couple of minutes and then you’re free to invest.

Decluttr 

Although you might not have any clothing or miscellaneous items to sell, we know that you’ll have some electronics collecting dust somewhere. Luckily, the Decluttr app allows you to sell all your old items for a fee including CDs, DVDs, old game consoles, Blu Rays, video games, iPods, iPhones, smartphones, tablets, and whatever else you may have.

Furthermore, you don’t have to take a picture and wait for an offer. Instead, you just scan the barcode of the product and Decluttr will let you know how much they’ll pay.

Typically, the prices will be lower than if you were to sell them elsewhere but this option is all about convenience. Within just a few minutes, you can have quotes for all your wanted electrical goods.

If you were to do it this week, you could earn $100 just from clearing your drawers. Additionally, you won’t have to pay a cent for shipping because you’ll be emailed shipping labels that cover everything you need.

SlideJoy 

Currently only available on Android, this particular money making app will replace your lock screen with various opportunities to get paid. Every time you look at your lock screen, the SlideJoy app show ads and offers. After you swipe to unlock, you can learn more whether it’s watching a video, looking at ads, or something different.

If you prefer to stay away from ads, this isn’t the app for you but as time goes on you’ll earn points. Once you’ve earned enough points, these can be put towards a gift card or even cash.

CashCrate

What better ways to make money with an app then to get paid to try new offers. Companies pay top dollar for you to try their products and services. With CashCrate, you complete free offers and get paid without having to spend any of your own money. You can choose to earn cash rewards from offers, surveys, shopping, referrals, or socializing.

Make Money – Earn Free Cash
