America Coast to Coast

See the best of America from coast to coast by train. Travel along legendary rail routes to visit some of the country’s most popular destinations like New York City to see the lights of Times Square or a show on Broadway; Washington DC to visit the nation’s capital and its historic museums and monuments; Chicago to shop the Magnificent Mile or take in the expansive views from the top of the Willis Tower; Glacier National Park for sightseeing along the Going-to-the-Sun Road aboard vintage red Jammer buses; the Grand Canyon, where you can admire views of this Natural Wonder of the World from a variety of different lookouts; Seattle where you can travel to the top of the Space Needle and lively Pike Place Market; and, Los Angeles where you can shop along Rodeo Drive and get a glimpse of Hollywood magic at Universal Studios.

Coast to Coast Train Travel
The American railroads are reminiscent of a bygone era. These were the trains that tamed the Wild West, fueled the Gold Rush, and served as the backbone of the Industrial Revolution. At its peak, it was the most luxurious mode of transportation that money could buy. Alas, the golden age of American railroads came to an end. Automobiles arrived and the airplane industry took off. Soon, many railroad companies had to cut losses and ceased their passenger services.

Train Service in The USA; at a Glance

This route map shows where Amtrak trains run.  Each of the very long-distance transcontinental routes shown in blue has one daily train, except for New York to Florida with 2 trains a day and the Sunset Limited (New Orleans-San Antonio-Los Angeles) which runs 3 times a week.  Important short distance routes (for example, Washington-New York-Boston or Los Angeles-San Diego) have regular intercity services and are shown in red.  It's easy to check Amtrak train times at www.amtrak.com, just use their online booking system.

Is Amtrak the only passenger train service in the US?

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, doing business as Amtrak, is a publicly funded railroad service operated and managed as a for-profit corporation which began operations on May 1, 1971, to provide intercity passenger train service in the United States.

How long does it take to drive from New York to Los Angeles?

That's how long it took three men to drive across the United States, from New York City to Los Angeles, smashing the record. The previous record, set in 2006, was 31 hours and 4 minutes, Jalopnik, an auto news site, reported. That's 2,813 miles. According to a Google maps search, that should take 42 hours.

How long does it take to fly from Los Angeles to New York?

The Falcon will then separate off and come back down at colossal speeds - it would take less than 12 minutes to fly from New York to Los Angeles, a journey which takes a normal jet more than five hours.

How long would it take to drive across the country?

It can be done in 48 hours, so if 2 people are really focused (and splitting the drive and sleep), you can complete the trip in 2 days. In general, 4 or 5 days is more humane. 12-hour days in the car; sleep in motels. A reasonable trip that includes enjoying yourself with stops is 7-10 days.

My tips: Unless you are attempting to break a record, you could rationally do this in 38-40 hours with a co-driver.
Assuming you drive with the flow of traffic, your best rolling average will be somewhere around 75 mph. To maximize your overall average, you will want to minimize time stopped.

1. Only stop for gas

2. Only use the bathroom while pumping gas.

3. Trade off with your co-driver at every gas stop.

4. Bring your own food with low glycemic index to avoid spikes in blood-sugar.

Relax and enjoy the scenery.

BTW, the idea of spending about 5 days doing this sounds really great.  You could sight-see, eat in local restaurants, and get some sleep

Coast Starlight

The Coast Starlight connects Los Angeles and Seattle and goes through some pretty amazing terrain (this Instavideo proves it!). When you travel on it, you’ll see the snow on the Cascade Range and Mount Shasta and some of the West Coast’s coolest cities (Portland, Seattle, Bay Area). Did we mention this awesome photo opp just north of San Luis Obispo, Calif.?
Maybe the coolest part about the Coast Starlight is the Pacific Parlour Car. Trust us, this ain’t your grandma’s parlour.  It’s got WiFi, comfy couches, tables for games or laptops and it’s own cafe.

Aside from the ones mentioned above my votes are for the Adirondack for views of the Hudson River Valley and the Adirondack Mountains, the Empire Builder between Seattle and Spokane as well as between Minneapolis and Milwaukee, the Southwest Chief for views of New Mexico and the Painted Desert, the Crescent for the wonderful swamps of the South, the Texas Eagle for stunning views of the wide open spaces of Northern and Central and West Texas and to catch glimpses of the St Louis Arch and the Capitol Limited has some beautiful views through Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. Oh and the Pennsylvanian has some good views as well.

A cross-country road trip is a rite of passage for all Americans, whether you're 18 or 81. The drive from San Francisco to New York promises rolling fields, rocky mountains and plenty of cheesy roadside attractions. You have a choice of routes; if you're in a hurry, it's possible to drive straight across the country in four or five days, a route that's nearly 3,000 miles long. If you have time, go out of your way to explore and see the sights, but plan to spend 10 to 14 days on the road.
