Choosing an air conditioner for your home is an important decision. Generally speaking, air conditioners are marvels of technology that do an excellent job of cooling your home during hot summer months. But the trick lies in selecting the right type of air conditioner that is ideal for your house and purpose.

How to Choose the Right Type of Air Conditioner for Your Home
A small air conditioner for a large space will not cool your room properly or reach the temperature that you are looking for, as it is under-powered. On the other hand, an oversized air conditioner may cool your room quickly, but will go on and off inefficiently which will cost you extra money.

Also, some air conditioners which dehumidify will run less leaving your room more humid if they are overpowered. So it is vital to choose an air conditioner that suits your purpose and will be efficient, reliable, and affordable.

Types of Air conditioners

Generally speaking, air conditioners come in 4 types. Split air conditioning systems are the most common which come as 2 units. The internal unit will remove the heat and moisture in the room and the external unit releases the heat outside. The compressor will pump refrigerant between both units which will effectively cool the room.

Heat pumps are another type of air conditioners that will pump heat from the house during summer to release it outside. During winter, heat pumps will extract heat from the outdoor air and warm the house. The central air conditioning systems come as a whole package where the compressor is big enough to cool the entire house or large spaces. The ducts will distribute cool air inside the house, and you can combine these air conditioners with your
furnace to heat your house during winter.

The ductless mini split air conditioning systems are ideal for houses without ducts where an accompanying indoor unit placed high on the wall will cool the room with help of blowers.

Choose the Right Air Conditioner

The size of the room or the space which you want to cool is the most important factor to consider while choosing an air conditioner. If you want to cool just one room at home of your office room, then opt for the window air conditioner. You can choose a small unit for a small room or a big unit for a large room. Usually they are installed inside a standard window, and come with options such as heat modes, digital control boards and programmable timers. If you want to cool a large space or your entire house, then go for the central air conditioning systems. It is quite expensive if you install a window air conditioner in each and every room.
Rather the central air conditioning unit will efficiently cool the large space, and will save you money and energy in the long run.

Another factor to consider is the type of room or space that you want to cool. Some rooms or spaces cannot be accessed by a central air conditioning unit. In such areas, you can opt for window or portable  air conditioners. All that is required is a window or a custom space in the wall to release the heat extracted from inside the house.

If you wish to cool more than 1 small room but do not wish to go for bigger air conditioners, then the portable air conditioner is perfect for you. They are free-standing, easy to move units that remove heat and moisture from the room. They extract fresh air to cool and distribute that cool air in the room. These portable air conditioners do not require any permanent installation and you can easily move them into other rooms.

So the key in choosing the right air conditioner is to determine your purpose and then selecting the ideal model for it.
