Google keyword planner is a free to use AdWords tool for bloggers and advertisers to find best bids for targeted customers. This PPC keyword research tool helps to improve SEO performance.

Tutorial: Make the most of the Google keyword planner tool

AdWords keyword planner is an entirely free tool that will help you boost the SEO or paid ads on your blog or web, effectively, I'm referring to the Google keyword tool.

This keyword tool was designed to meet the needs of people using AdWords to post paid ads on the Google search engine.

How to use the Google keyword planner?
In particular, Google Keyword Planner was created so that the people that contracted the service, could find the keywords that best define their products or services and, also, they could know what volume of the monthly search had those terms to explore, as well as, its competition Bid and the average bid price.

But, that Google Keywords tool was created for the consumers of AdWords, doesn't mean that to use it you have to contract that service.

Nothing further from reality, believe me.

Being able to enjoy the advantages of keyword planner to boost your SEO is very easy because to be able to use this fantastic application, you only have to have a Google account and create a first fictional campaign in AdWords.

Something critical that you should not forget is that after doing the test, you must deactivate the campaign or change it to the state of pause, since, in the case of not doing it, the campaign will begin to work and you will start to charge.

Once inside Google Keyword planner and passed the previous steps, you must go to the main menu and click on "Tools ⇒ Keyword Planner."

Now you have four options that you will have to choose:

  1. Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category.
  2. Obtain data and trends of search volume.
  3. Combine lists of keywords to get new keywords.
  4. Get forecasts of click performance and costs.

For the case of this tutorial you can rely on two of the options:

  • Search for new keywords using a website, phase or category

This will help you find the ones that have not been used before for our product or service pages or, if applicable, our articles.

This option is especially useful when you don't know which keywords to use or do not have the entire set of them.

  • Obtain data and trends of search volume

In this step, you can take advantage of the potential of the keyword planner and insert a list of search terms that you already have well established.

This option serves you if you know exactly what you want to use.

I believe that the first alternative is the most productive, since, although you have a clear list of keywords, you can always find new ones that you did not know.

For this reason, in this article you will talk exclusively about the option:
"Search for new keywords using a website URL, phrase, or category."
Great! Let's begin…
Google Keyword Planner is the best free tool for bloggers and digital marketer.

Although Google Keyword planner tool helps you in an extraordinary way, you must be clear that you have to have an initial idea about the products, services or articles that you want to write.

I recommend you to take pencil and paper for pointing all the ideas that you have and define your products, services or define what you are going to talk about in your next article.

Once you have that list, your next objective will be to study them and to evaluate which ones are the most suitable for you.

To make all this more educational, I will carry out a practical case of a web of SEO tool company.

I know, I do not have a lovely letter :)

In this short list, I have included certain search terms that will help you have a foundation on which to work with the AdWords keyword tool.

Keyword filters and inclusion

After preparing the list the next step is to include the keywords in the tool.

Keyword inclusion

You can do it one at a time or all at once.
Mind, the keyword planner does not support more than 1,000 in a single wave (in my case there will be no problems), so, I will include them all.

NOTE: Google Keyword Planner is not case-sensitive.
Moreover, it is advisable not to include accents (tildes), since, most people do not use them when they perform a search.

Landing page

The next step is: "Your landing page."

It is not necessary to complete it unless you want to see the positions you already have for those keywords with your website.

Product Category

This filter is active if you are not clear what the terms or themes will be used.

That is, if you enter an entirely unknown market or if you want the keyword planner to give you general ideas.

In my case, I will not use it, since, I have my own list.

Segmentation

In this section, you can segment the search by several filters: country, language, search engine, negative keywords.

Country

If you have discovered, or it is evident that your market is focused on a single country, use this filter.

Google-keyword-planner-targeted-country
In the case of the example, and how interested in customers from any country, I used United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India. But you should leave it empty if your targeted customer is from around the world.

Language

This is a filter similar to the one above.
The difference between the two is that sometimes you may be focusing your services or products to a single language, but not to a single country, as can be the case of the "English-speaking" market. [In some countries this option may not appear by default]

In my example, I will mark the filter in English.

Search Engine

In this screen provided by the keyword planner, you can choose whether you only want keywords that are displayed on Google or, instead, displayed on Google and its search partners.

I personally, I'd rather leave it just for Google.

Negative keywords

This will prevent certain keywords from appearing in the report.

Sometimes, you do not want to appear in certain markets or by certain search terms.

In the example I am exposing, I would say that a negative keyword could be "free," so I will include it.

While you are using this tool for SEO, I recommend you to try SEMRush. This one is worth your time and money.

Search Customization

Here are other types of Google Keyword Planner tool filters that will be of great help.

Among them, there are filters, options, and keywords to include.

Keyword filters

This filter will help you to remove from the report those that you consider being invalid.

What do I mean by that they are not valid?

For those that do not surpass:

  • Some monthly searches.
  • That the suggested bid be higher or lower than an amount of money.
  • Make the ad impression percentage below or above a certain number.
  • Let the proportion of organic impressions be lower or higher than a range.
  • That the average organic position is less than one value.
  • Some bidding competition.

Keep in mind that if you use this type of filters is because you have very clear to what audience you want to reach, both paid (AdWords) and organic.

Keyword Options

Here are four filters that will help you in your keyword search.
These are:

  1. Show only ideas directly related to the search terms.
  2. Show keywords in my account.
  3. Show keywords in my plan.
  4. Show ideas for adult content.

Let's see the most important of all and that is the first: show only ideas directly related to your search terms.

I must admit that this is one of the filters that I like the most.

It's about asking the keyword tool to just show you ideas that are closely related to the ones I've asked for.

I usually use this if I am pretty clear what I am looking for.
However, if you am looking for a new niche, which you do not know, then deactivate it.

In this case, I'll let you leave it disabled.
This would be the catch with all the report already ready to send and process.

Now you are ready to be shown the report you have prepared.
Just click on the "Get ideas" button.

Google-keyword-planner-get-ideas

It is of vital importance to click the "Keyword Ideas" button (it's the one that interests you) because, by default, the keyword planner shows you" Ad group ideas."

Once this is done, you will have your keyword report ready.
Now only order and export.

Sorting the Keyword Report

The first thing to do is to ask the tool, Google Keyword Planner tool, to order from highest to lowest number of monthly searches.
This will help you to get most relevant keywords in the top position to find it quickly.

To do this, you must click on "Average monthly searches" and will automatically sort the report.
In any case, you can always order it by any other pattern and from highest to lowest or vice versa.
Now you have to do is download the report and clean it.

First, to download it, you must click the "Download" button and choose the CSV format for Excel.
From here, it's up to you to choose the right keywords for your blog or web.

I hope this tutorial from the Google AdWords keyword planner helps you.
