In a world full of noise, how do you get people to actually read what you write? It takes more than good content or great design. The most important part of writing an article is the headline.
  The same principle applies to blog posts, book chapters, and so on: The title is where your focus should be. You should begin and end every article with the question: “Would this make me want to read on?”
  If not, do not publish until you have got a catchy headline. Concentrate on this, and you’ll get more readers, more buzz, and more love.

How to write catchy headlines

Too often the headline is the most neglected part of writing an article. People just gloss over it without taking much time to consider it. In their minds, it’s the cherry on top. No, friends; it’s not. The headline is the sundae.

I sometimes deliberate over titles for 30–60 minutes before settling on one that works. And I often go back and change them. This is what it takes to write a good headline.

If you need some help concocting catchier headlines, here are a few simple tricks.

Use numbers

There’s a reason why so many copywriters use numbers in their headlines. It works.

Do an experiment: Go to the grocery store, and scan the magazines in the checkout lane. Look at the front-page article headlines. It doesn’t matter if it’s a fitness magazine or a tabloid; many of them will be using numerals to start off the headline.

There aren’t really any rules (as far as I know) regarding what numbers work best, but people typically only remember three to five points. That said, sometimes a really obscure number like 19 or 37 can catch people’s attention.

Use interesting adjectives

Here are some examples:

• Effortless
• Painstaking
• Fun
• Free
• Incredible
• Essential
• Absolute
• Strange

Use unique rationale

If you’re going to do a list post, be original. For example consider the following:

• Reasons
• Principles
• Facts
• Lessons
• Ideas
• Ways
• Secrets
• Tricks

If possible, never use things. Please, for the love of Pete, don’t use things. You can do better than that.

Use what, why, how, or when

These are trigger words. I typically use “why” and “how” the most, because I’m often trying to persuade or enable someone. Typically, you’ll use either a trigger word or a number. Rarely does it sound good to do both?

Make an audacious promise

Promise your reader something valuable. Will you teach her how to learn a new skill? Will you persuade her to do something she’s never done before? Will you unlock an ancient mystery?

What you want to do is dare your reader to read the article. Without over-promising, be bold. Be seductive (in the most innocuous way possible, of course). Be dangerous. And then deliver what you promised.

Try this formula

Here’s a simple headline-writing formula:

Number or Trigger word + Adjective + Keyword + Promise

Example: Take the subject “bathing elephants.” You could write an article entitled, “How to Bath an Elephant” or “Why I Love Bathing Elephants.”

Or you could apply this formula and make it: “18 Unbelievable Ways You Can Bathe an Elephant Indoors”

Another (more serious) example: Take a bold promise like “selling your house in a day.”

Apply the formula and you get: “How You Can Effortlessly Sell Your Home in Less than 24 Hours”

People don’t want to be tricked into reading something boring; they want to be drawn into something exciting. Make it worth their while.

Take extra time to consider what headline will grab people’s attention the most, and make sure that it describes your content in an honest, but attractive, way. They won’t regret it, and neither will you.

I can not write", better think, "Okay, I can. I'm going to make it. "

Mistake # 2: Do not edit your work

You need time to edit your writing when it is cold. In other words, let some time pass before you return and work on the article again. You will see it with a new sense of curiosity, perspective, and insight. Not everyone loves to edit. I understand, but look at it this way: editing turns something wonderful into something even more wonderful. That is something to pursue.

Mistake # 3: Do not make the final correction of your work (proofreading)

Mistake # 5: Do not Define Your Pronouns

What does "not define your pronouns" mean? Let me explain:

The following words are pronouns:

• The
• This
• These
• Those
• That

There are many pronouns in most languages. Pronouns are useful, helpful and are an important part of speech.

What is the problem? Do not define them, for example:

• Those are bad. What is wrong?
• That's not okay. That is not good?
• It's a problem. What is a problem?
• Destroy those. Destroy what?

You must define all the pronouns either within the context of your writing or within the utterance. Indefinite pronouns lead to unclear scriptures.

Mistake # 6: Write too fast or too slow

There is no correct writing speed. Each writer must write to the rhythm to which he adjusts and that allows him to flow his creativity. However, be aware that your writing speed influences the quality of your writing. That is to say,

• If you write very fast, you can make mistakes carelessly.
• If you write too slow, you can make awkward mistakes.

When you read, the mind goes faster on information than when it is written. Keep this in mind when you write. Your mind easily processes long sentences or big words when you write them. But it is not the same for the reader, whose eyes are scanning through your content at 300 words per minute - your work is tedious, ponderous, slow and agonizing.

If you write fast, your brain is moving to a close equivalent of the standard reading speed. Of course, you should still pay attention to your words, statements, and writing. But at the same time, you will be able to lower those thoughts in a more fluid and natural way.

In 2016 a study from the University of Waterloo found that "the quality of your writing will be better if you just type slower."

Does this mean that you should move your fingers slowly, write with one hand, or just walk painfully at a sluggish pace? Not necessarily.

Each person has their own appropriate pace. Also, it depends on the type of content that demands a slower or faster pace. Move to the pace that is best for you.

In some situations, ideas and words come at an incredibly fast pace. You have to type as fast as you can. In other cases, you may be doing careful research, searching for the precise word, or writing on a sensitive topic. In the latter case, going slower is a good idea.

Mistake # 7: Not understanding who your readers are

If you want to become a better writer, become a better student of your reader. In fact, it is quite simple.

Writing well is connecting with your readers in a meaningful way. You will not be able to perform that task unless you get your head on. I challenge all writers, before placing a single word on a page, to do a lot of research and gain a lot of understanding from their potential readers, as much as possible.

The process is as simple as going through the exercise of creating a person and remembering that person every time you write.

Mistake # 8: Do not Sketch Your Article Before Writing It

Sketching can bring you memories of the Spanish class in high school. Do not worry. It's not what I'm talking about here.

The process of sketching is just creating a structure for your article.

I write a lot, and one of the first things that help me write and write with clarity and speed is sketching. First, I quickly write an introduction and conclusion. This helps me to steer the subject of my topic, and then summarize it. Doing so also allows me to fill the gap between something relevant and meaningful.

Generally, my sketch only looks like a bullet listing. My goal is to write the main things I want to talk about. Usually, they are not even complete statements (It's okay, I'm not writing my article at this point, I'm just sketching it).

The entire process takes me ten minutes, but it saves me hours of time. Also, it gives more clarity to my article.

Writing better is getting rid of old habits and horrible mistakes. Despite writing almost daily for ten years, I still make mistakes. Hopefully, my mistakes are less and less, but I still do sometimes.

Use Well Formatted Tense to Make Your Headline Effective

A “capital” idea: The first word in the head should be capitalized as should all proper nouns. Most headline words appear in lower-case letters. Do not capitalize every word. (Some publications do capitalize the first letter of every word; the Kansan and most other publications do not.) In most cases, do capitalize the first word after a colon. (In some cases, when only one word follows the colon, the word would not be capitalized. Use your best judgment.)  

Number, please: Numbers often go against AP style in headlines. For example, you may start a sentence with a number and, even though that number is below 10, you do not have to spell it out.

Subject and verb, please: Don't write headlines in which nouns and verbs (other than “is” or “was”) are assumed. And don’t start a headline with a verb.

More things to avoid: Do not editorialize, exaggerate, generalize or use long words. Keep it simple and direct.

Simplify your offer or message. Edit it down to its bare essence. Delete any superfluous or redundant language. Be ruthless, and boil it down to its most basic form. If you write a great headline, you might not need any body copy. Don’t be afraid of one- and two-word sentences.

Turn your subheads into Headlines

Often when people try to be creative, their creativity gets in the way of the message they want to communicate. In other words, creativity becomes the goal instead of communicating. Here’s a clue: If someone has to read the body copy to figure out what your ad is about, you may be pursuing “clever” versus “clarity.” You’ll frequently see ads that require subheads to provide the context, payoff or offer. In many cases, these should have been used instead of the headline, which should be tossed away entirely. So be honest with yourself when you review your marketing materials, and ask, “Would this subhead make a more effective headline than the seemingly more ‘creative’ headline above it?” Sometimes just delivering your offer/message straight is the best approach. 

Avoid puns, idioms and clichés

Trite Headline: “Saving more is easy as pie.”
Better Headline: “Here’s how ridiculously easy it is for you to save more.”

Create a Sense of Urgency

Another way to swiftly move your readers from considering your content to actually clicking it is by crafting a headline that creates a sense of urgency. You want them to feel that the information housed in your blog is time-sensitive and offers value for them right now. For example:

Urgent language, referencing a specific time frame (summer), a specific event (buying a house) or a specific fear (that your blog is badly designed) can help inspire your audience to click and explore your content more quickly.

Sometimes it helps to unclog your thoughts by flushing all the mandatory material on paper first. Write the body copy — the offer, the call-to-action, the disclosure — write all that stuff down and whittle it to the fewest words possible.
