Hashtags won’t make your pins more searchable.

Because Pinterest is a long term platform, with 30% of clicks happening a month or more after the Pin goes live, some people aren’t giving it enough time to take off. It’s so important to know your audience and to give them what they want.
 
Think about the search-ability of your content. It will continue to live in both Google and Pinterest searches. Give the content time to get into the system, get clicked on, get searched. Other social media platforms, like Facebook or Twitter, are more immediate platforms. Your posts either get seen within the first few hours or they don’t. Regardless, you have to put something new out there. With Pinterest, that content lives on.

Create boards with keywords in your title

Pinterest has fantastic search capabilities. Help even more people find and your business by using keywords in your board titles. Make sure that you select a category for each board to help people find them and for Pinterest to recommend your board as well.

Don’t Forget the Images

If you don’t have a Pinterest friendly image for your post, it won’t get Pinned. Be sure to create Pinterest friendly images for all of your content. If you don’t want that vertical, Pinterest friendly image in the post itself, use a plug-in like Social Warfare to keep the image hidden. It will still show when it is being Pinned, but won’t show in the post itself.

Images aren’t only important for Pinterest. Twitter and Facebook are also becoming more and more dependent on images for content to be noticed. If you aren’t creating images for your content, you are likely missing out on a lot of possible shares.

Don’t know where to start? Try a website like Canva or PicMonkey. Both are free and extremely user friendly. With Canva, you have the advantage of them being integrated with Tailwind, so you don’t even have to leave your scheduler to work on images.

Use the description to spread your ideas

Again, use keywords in your description and keep in mind that people can tweet your pins. The text in the pin description is the tweet so keep it short, interesting, and relevant.

Creating images doesn’t have to be difficult.

I always tell my clients to start working on one image at a time. Preferably the post on your blog getting the most traffic. Follow these quick tips for your workflow:

• Get the right size template (735 x 1100 — Current ratio 1.2.8) 
• Choose a simple, readable font to add a text overlay to the photo. (Use San-serif fonts so they are easy to read on mobile.) 
• Now rinse and repeat. You’ve created the size, picked your favorite font and you can keep this same template in use on every single image to create a branded image look. Every single image.
  

We have found that branded images, those that use the same font, look and colors have a higher rate of click thru than those that are all different.
Optimize with the Perfect Pinnable Post

There are four elements every blog post needs to be successful.

• Pinterest image! We just covered that. You need to have a pinnable image in the post preferably at the top or bottom. 
• Links to related content on your site. Introduce them to more of your content they might like. For example, if you have a bread recipe that has gone viral, do you have more bread recipes on your site they might be interested in? Don’t assume they will use the search bar. Put a link in the post making it easy for them to click. 
• Ability to share your content. Pinterest users like to share and save for later. Make it easy for them by adding a simple plug in to your site listing all the social media channels you think your readers would like to share to. I’m a BIG fan of Social Warfare. 
• Easy access to your email list. Are they introduced to that email list through a pop up or sign up box. Have you created an awesome freebie for them to capture their email address? If not, put a small image in your sidebar encouraging them to click.
  

Knowing Your Audience

Are you ignoring analytics, both Pinterest and Google hoping/assuming everything is just swimming along wonderfully?

First, it’s helpful to understand Pinterest traffic first. Pinterest traffic is slow, slow, slow, slow. Seriously, it’s the slowest moving social media platform on the planet.

You want to watch traffic in chunks of 1 week, 1 month and 1 quarter. Looking at them from hour-to-hour or day to day is enough to drive you to drink. You won’t see the proper trends. What took off this week, last month, last quarter and as most who already look at analytics, the last 2 years.

In Pinterest analytics you’re looking for clicks and repins. Look at them in 30 day increments. Now take that information and compare with Google Analytics.

Do you see the same trends? Is the same pin in Pinterest analytics giving you the same traffic in GA? Pinterest analytics can have some glitches and I’ve seen them report that particular pin is driving a ton of clicks but when I look at GA it’s nowhere to be found. That’s why I always look at GA for my ‘real’ data.

You’re looking to find the top 10 pins driving the most traffic to your site at any given block of time. Look at those top 10 and make sure the posts are optimized, like we talked about in number 3.

Know what the best of the best to use your time wisely on Pinterest.

Trends also change from month to month. Knowing when something is trending up or down will help you adjust your strategy of pinning as needed. Seasonal content can drive a TON of traffic.

You have to know what the best of the best is if you’re going to use your time wisely on Pinterest.

Ideal Number of Pins Per Day

Gone are the days of throwing as many Pinterest pins like darts and hoping they stick. On today’s Pinterest platform you need a targeted strategy and optimized content to fit within what Pinterest calls the Smart Feed.

This Smart Feed rates pins based on these specific criteria:

• Quality images. 
• Keyword rich pin descriptions that encourage pinners to pin.

This is a big question in the Pinterest community is how many times per day should you pin to get your pins seen in the Smart Feed.

I’m always a fan of quality over quantity. I suggest pinning between 10-30 pins per day.

If you spend time curating great content that your people interact with, Pinterest will reward you regardless of how many times per day you pin.

I know that pinning more per day will result in more followers, but I want you to get traffic.

Traffic brings email subscribers, monetary gain, and growing your readership. A large number of followers don’t always translate to more traffic. Pin the best of the best — both your content and other people’s content and no more than 30 pins per day using a scheduler or live.

How to verify website on pinterest for blogger?

Verifying your Blog on Pinterest is a good for bloggers. Once verified, Pinterest will prominently display the blog web address, which should help bloggers engage with others and “brand” their page. (By increasing our credibility and  hopefully traffic too.) It is also excellent for SEO since it will give you a valuable link back from Pinterest.


Pinterest has now made it possible for those of us on the blogger platform to easily verify our websites using an HTML Meta Tag!  Yea! It’s a fairly simple process, and I will walk you through it (to the best of my ability) with a few screen shots…

So here's a quick guide on how to verify your website on Pinterest.

Make sure you are in the “old look” of Pinterest when you start this, for some reason the code generated when you are in the “new look” is causing some people problems…

Step 1. Log in to your Pinterest account and Click the gear menu, then Account settings:

Scroll down to Verify Website and click the button.


On the next page you will have the option to download an HTML file or to Verify with an HTML Meta Tag.

Step 2. Click the option to verify with a Meta Tag.  You will see the following:


Select and copy your meta tag.  (It is the code in the gray box.)

Step 3. Log in to blogger and go to “Template” and select Edit HTML.

Note: You may see a warning message, click proceed.

Step 4. Click the button to expand widget templates.

(Before making any changes to your HTML code, always make a copy.  There is a back up restore button on the Template page, click it to download your backup copy and save it somewhere safe.)

Step 5. Hit CNRL F and search for the word ”  head  “.
You should find two – the opening head tag: <head> and the closing head tag:  </head>

Your Pinterest generated code needs to go somewhere in between these 2 tags

Paste the Meta Tag info below the opening HEAD tag.  <head> (But above the closing </head> tag.)

A few commenters have mentioned the verification only worked for them when they put the code directly below the opening head tag, so be sure to put the Pinterest generated code to right below the opening head tag.

Step 6. Test your changes to make sure you didn’t mess up your blog.  To do this, click preview and make sure it loads properly.  Then click save template.

Step 7. Go back over to Pinterest and click the click here button for Pinterest to verify your blog.


That is it, if it worked, you are verified!  Head back to your main page to check it out!
Yes You are done. You have verified your blog to Pinterest.

Step 8. Now you will see that your website/blog is confirmed in your pinterest profile.

Right now, you can confirm your site for top-level domains like  www.onlinelivingblog.com. If your website looks like www.onlinelivingblog.com/example, it isn't a top-level domain.

Note: If you already confirmed your website on one account and you’d like it for another, you’ll have to remove your website from the first account first. Then you’ll need to go through the setup steps again on the new Pinterest account.

Most people know that visuals are becoming increasingly more important for online marketing.
Through the years, I’ve studied visual content and the channels in which visual content is promoted.

Here are 5 Pinterest myths that many people still believe. Are you guilty of believing these popular visual marketing myths?

Myth #1 – Due to Pinterest’s Smart Feed Algorithm, When You Pin Doesn’t Matter Too Much

Pinterest implemented it’s smart feed algorithm which displays older pins to users, even if they are a day old or older. So even if you pin something during non-peak times, it can still get a good amount of exposure due to how Pinterest displays pins to people.

So does this mean that old advice to pin during peak times in the evening is no longer true?
A lot of people think so, but let’s take a closer look…

While it may be true that most people are on during the evening, Pinterest doesn’t function like Twitter, especially now that it has implemented its Smart Feed algorithm.
Pinterest seems to know that people can pin good content at any time during the day, including days and times when traffic is lower than average.

And Pinterest does want to display high quality pins to its users. Quality pins keep users engaged and encourages them to keep returning to the site.

While Pinterest does display recent pins, it’s not a 100% real time feed like Twitter’s feed. In fact, many images that it shows you will be from the day before or older.

When I log into my Pinterest account and click on the first few images in my feed, all of the images in the top row are from the previous day.

1) Log into Pinterest. You should see a bunch of pins on your feed after you log in.
2) Click on any pin you want to inspect
3) Notice the date that the image was pinned (the pin in this example was at the top of my feed, but it was pinned yesterday)

While some pins are shown in real time, you’ll notice that many are not. At the top of my feed, some pins were from within the past few hours but some pins were as old as 7 days old.

If you are not going to be online or working in the evening, you can use a tool like Buffer to schedule your pins.

Tip #1: So when should you pin an image? Pinning in the evenings is still optimal if you want to reach the most people.

Pinterest will also display your pin to other people long after you originally pinned it, if it is popular, including to people who are on during non-peak times.

Myth #2 – Only Women’s Stuff Does Well on Pinterest

A lot of people think that since most of Pinterest’s users are women that only niches that cater to women’s interests do well on Pinterest.
However, one of the things that Pinterest has focused on in an effort to grow and monetize the site is growing it’s male audience.

For example, in 2014, Pinterest introduced guided search, which displays search results based on the gender of the user. This feature and other changes have resulted in a 73% growth in male users in 2014.
The number of males using Pinterest is growing faster than new female users. And even though a majority of users on Pinterest are female, Pinterest already has a large male user base.

Tip #2: Even if you are in a niche that caters to men’s interests, Pinterest is worth examining. Before your write off Pinterest as a marketing channel, do a quick search for similar users and pins to see if Pinterest users are interacting with content that is targeted towards your audience.

Myth #3 – Creating Visuals is Too Difficult or Costly

Despite all the data on the effectiveness of using visuals, many businesses still aren’t using visuals in their content marketing.
One likely reason is that some people think that creating visuals is too difficult, time consuming or costly. People that blog often and aren’t active on sites like Pinterest, Instagram or Google Plus might not feel like adding visuals to their blog post is worth the time.

Sites like Pixlr and Buffer Pablo make image editing easy. But it still takes some time to learn how to use these tools and create visuals with them.

However, smart marketers know that creating visual content doesn’t have to be costly or time consuming.
Some people like to add a visual header to each blog post so that it can have at least some chance of getting shared on visual social media channels like Pinterest or Google Plus.

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to create visual headers consistently is to create a template that you can keep using and just change the background image.

You can even get free images that you can use as backgrounds from sites like Pixabay.
Another important thing to note is that as you create more and more visuals, you will be able to create them faster and more efficiently.

Tip #3: Invest the time to create visual content. With the tools available today, it doesn’t take a lot of time and can be done inexpensively.

Myth #4 – Pinterest Won’t Work in My Niche

A lot of people think that Pinterest only works for things like food, women’s clothes or arts and crafts. While these niches are some of the obvious winners on Pinterest, you may be surprised at some niches that are doing well on Pinterest.

A lot of people might be surprised to hear that real estate agents can benefit from marketing on Pinterest.
Bill Gassett is the #1 real estate agent in all of New England and a proficient social media marketer. He has grown a following of thousands on Twitter, Google Plus and other social media channels but said that Pinterest was his top social media referrer.

Tip #4: Pinterest has a large and diverse audience that is continuing to grow. Be sure to explore your niche on Pinterest and see if other pins are doing well on this channel instead of just assuming that it won’t work.

Myth #5 – I Don’t Have Time for Pinterest

Pinterest is one of the easiest social media channels to participate in. In fact, I can manage my Pinterest account in just a few minutes a day.

Unlike other social media channels, you don’t even have to log in every day. Popular pins can get re-pinned for months after they were first shared. So you don’t even have to log on every day to get traction from Pinterest, although consistency is still encouraged.
Asides from using Pinterest for traffic generation and building brand awareness, I use Pinterest as a way to organize useful resources that I find. As a blogger, keeping track of useful blog posts and data is something that I need to do anyways.

And Pinterest makes it easy to do.

Another important thing to note is that Pinterest is not a very “social” channel. In other words, people are mostly just pinning things and not sending messages to other members or even commenting.
The lack of social chatter on Pinterest can actually be a good thing as it reduces the chance that Pinterest will become a time consuming distraction.

Getting lots of pins from your blog posts can increase engagement and drive traffic.
It can also help boost your performance on search engines because pins to your post are ‘do-follow’ links.

Pinterest’s recent growth has been unstoppable. According to comScore, Pinterest has grown by 4377% since May 2011. Many blogs are using Pinterest effectively to increase traffic and build engagement.

What is Pinterest? Just the latest craze when it comes to sharing wedding ideas, how to decorate your home, and what to cook.

It can also be a tremendously useful platform to share photos and drive traffic to your blog.

Here are several steps to increase traffic that you can put to use.

How to Get Traffic to Your Blog Using Pinterest

Create a Pinterest Profile

Do you have a Pinterest account? If you do, I strongly suggest linking your Pinterest profile to your blog, as well as writing a little about yourself and mentioning your blog in the “about” section. It’s a get way to connect with new readers and get traffic to your blog. Other Pinterest users may even decide they want to follow your blog too. SCORE!

How to Link Your Blog to Your Pinterest Profile:

Step 1: Log into your Pinterest account.
Step 2: Click on the “Settings” option.

Step 3: Scroll down to where it says “about” and “website” and put in your address and information.

Step 4: Go to the bottom and click “Save”.
Step 5: You will see a globe under your profile picture. This icon should link to your site.

Why Pinterest Works for Bloggers

Pinterest is an amazing tool to use as a blogger. I was shocked at how much traffic I’ve started to get from Pinterest. People are able to pin images from my site, which link back to my site, and when someone sees an image with a title they like, they click on it, and now they are reading my information.

Pinterest is my second largest referral site. In fact, I took the month of November off last year (I was on vacation) and didn’t post anything. I didn’t even check my stats because I knew they would be depressing. When I came back from vacation and checked my stats, I actually had more traffic in November (when I didn’t post) than in the previous month when I was posting about 5 times a week. Thanks to Pinterest people were still coming to my blog, leaving comments, and becoming followers even though I hadn’t posted a thing!
As you can see on the below chart taken from Google Analytics for November 1-30, 2011, Pinterest was actually my number one source for traffic.


Here is a screen shot from Google Analytics for the last 30 days on my blog. It shows how on an average month, Pinterest is my 2nd leading referral site.

Get Traffic By Creating Pinnable Text Images

Personally, I use Photoshop Elements to create my pinnable text images.

Don’t forget to insert your website name or URL on your button. This will help readers to find you, especially if a pin is not linked directly to your site at some point.

Some of the older badges below do not include my website and logo. For anyone taking the time to create an image for Pinterest, you’ll want to make sure that at least your blog name is on each button.


That isn’t my most pinned post, but it was one that got pinned very quickly. I was shocked when I noticed it had been pinned between 40-50 times in the first hour! After that, I was hooked and knew I needed to make pinnable buttons for more of my posts.

Notice how all my buttons use the same color and font as my website? I do my best to keep my branding consistent throughout my buttons so when someone sees them on Pinterest they think, “Oh, this is from Click it Up a Notch! I MUST check it out because she is amazing!”

Pinterest is a great way to drive more traffic to your blog. When you create a Pinterest account, you’ll be provided with several ‘boards’ to get you started with using your account. But what’s great is that YOU can create your own boards too. And it’s this feature that you want to tap to generate traffic to your blog.

From the Pinterest dashboard, click ‘Add’, and then click ‘Create a Board’. From here’s please note the following tips.

1. Create relevant but catchy board names.

For example, if your blog topic is about getting rid of acne, instead of just using ‘acne’ as a board name, why not ‘acne be gone’, or ‘acne free secrets’. This way, your board is relevant and yet you still managed to create a bit more excitement.

2. Select a suitable board category.

You’re not asked to select a category when creating a new board so it’s up to you to NOT miss this step and find and select an appropriate one.

3. Add a board description.

Remember that Pinterest users find boards they like by typing certain keywords on the search form. So take every opportunity you can to add keywords for your boards by putting a board description.

4. Board covers are important.

Since Pinterest is image-heavy, it’s important that you select a great board cover. Covers are chosen from the images in the board itself (i.e., whatever was ‘pinned’ for that board). You can change this by clicking ‘Edit Board Cover’ and selecting a different image.

5. Think outside the box.

So say your blog topic is all about acne. Does this mean you’re stuck to only acne pictures or acne cure articles to pin? Of course not! How about creating boards about acne cure recipes (food is a hot category in Pinterest)? Or how about a new board about make-up secrets to cover skin imperfections? Or why not create an acne cartoon strip on your blog where you pin each cartoon on Pinterest? Get creative! If you are, the boards you can create will be more than you think.

6. Main board(s) should have maximum exposure.

It’s good to create multiple boards but always keep in mind that you should have a ‘main board’ and some ‘supporting boards’. Your main board(s) should be on top of your other boards so that they are placed above the fold. (Boards visible here tend to get more traffic.)

Pinterest is a great marketing medium but it’s image heavy and people who browse Pinterest have SHORT attention spans. But if you keep your boards interesting and your pins amazing… blog traffic will come!

I follow a lot of amazing Pinterest boards, but often forget about specific ones because there are so many that I love! As of now, there is no way to bookmark your favorite Pinterest boards directly on Pinterest. So I figured out a way to bookmark them myself. Sure you can bookmark a Pinterest board in your web browser like any other website, but I would rather have my favorites be easily accessible when I’m on Pinterest.
This easy 4 step tip is a great way to visually bookmark your favorite boards directly on Pinterest!

1. Click on a Pinterest Board you Love…

For this example, I’m bookmarking the I Heart Faces Photography Tutorials Board. It’s definitely one of my favorites!

2. Find a good photo that represents that board and pin it to a brand new board.

I called my new board “favorites”. Make sure you type a description about the board.

3. Click on the bottom right icon to edit the link.

4. Copy and paste the URL to the board into your pin source.

I like to open a new browser window with the board, then edit the pin source.

Now you will have a personal board of your favorite Pinterest Boards that you can easily find!

I love having visual photos that represent each board. I’m sure Pinterest will come out with an easy way to do this soon, but for now this works for me!

When you’re a power user on Pinterest, the social network of the moment, doors start to open for you. You make top 100 people to follow lists. You rank more highly on Google. You might even land lucrative career opportunities.

“In these last few days, I’ve had job offers based on people seeing the meteoric rise of my follower count,” Miller, who resides in Tokyo, Japan, told the Daily Dot. “I’ve had global brand marketing directors asking me what my secret is. I’ve have stumbled across a formula for doing something that a lot of people are trying to do right now.”

The 32-year-old copywriter doesn’t think he’s done anything special, though. In fact, he thinks anyone can do what he did with the right mindset.
“I don’t think an ‘ordinary’ pinner will ever succeed,” he said. “However, I think any person or brand has the potential to succeed. They just need to make the decision to be extraordinary.”
Here is his four-step process for achieving overnight Pinterest success, with comments from Miller.
 
1) Start small
Miller doesn’t mean spend eight-hour days doing nothing but pinning, quite the contrary. He built his Pinterest empire in far shorter increments, working for just 15 minutes per day.

“For the last three months I have gotten into a morning routine of spending 15 minutes actively searching for content to pin. I don’t think you need to be one of those people who lives on Pinterest all day to make an impact. You can build your archive over time, and it will slowly become more valuable.”

2) Bigger is better
But the end goal of those pinning sprints, Miller said, is to amass an enormous Pinterest archive—a set of boards people can lose themselves in for hours. Miller has 29 boards and 2,224 pins. The more content he puts on the site, the higher the chance that people will find something he pinned.

“People will be excited to stumble onto a board with 100 amazing images. It takes some time, but it can be an incremental investment I’ve found.”

3) Drop your Pinterest presumptions
Miller’s most popular boards by far are the ones he has dedicated to sports-related topics. That might be a surprise to anybody who’s considered Pinterest to be little more than a frilly fashion and design haven.

“I definitely get annoyed every time I read another article claiming that Pinterest is somehow inherently only for certain subject matter or for a certain sex. Pinterest is neutral. Like most things, you get out of it what you put in. Pinterest is perfect for any visual subject that people are passionate about.”

4) Geek out!
In Miller’s opinion, the most important piece of the puzzle are pins that you’re passionate about. Whether it’s sports—Miller’s personal obsession—or another hobby, he said it’s imperative to only pin images you’re excited about.

“I think you have to be willing to be obsessed and really dive into some kind of niche. And I’m sure at this point, there are some huge opportunities to own some untapped subject matter, like I did with sports. But I think if you approach any subject with a degree of artistry, looking for the unusual point of view, and keeping your pin choices surprising, that you will also be able to find success.”
